Oasis Backpackers' Hostel - Granada
Placeta Correo Viejo 3, 18010 Granada
26-06-2008
An inexpensive [relatively] hostel in Granada that’s clean and comfortable too. I think we spent more time here than at any other hostel during our trip in Spain. There’s a rooftop deck that’s perfect for laying out, enjoying the sun, sipping on wine. It’s fantastic.
Their dinner parties are a fun way to get to know the other travelers. The food was surprisingly very good [we were there for Indian curry night], and it’s usually ridiculously priced [very low!] since it’s aimed at the low budget traveler. Yum!
The hostel is in a central location, easy to find. It’s just a few steps off of Caladeria Nueva and a short hike up some stairs for the best view of the Alhambra [Mirador San Nicolas] at sunset. Everything else is within walking or bussing distance.
There’s free luggage storage, free lockers in the rooms, and several computers available for internet access. If the bathroom in your room is in use, there’s one downstairs next to the kitchen!
HelloBCN Backpackers Hostel - Sants-Montjuïc
Lafont 8-10, 08004 Barcelona

Fun. The people working here are fantastic, and there’s always something to do. Large common area where you can hang out and throw back a couple of beers with other travelers.
Clean. Large lockers in rooms. It’s one of the bigger hostels I’ve stayed at. Dorm-style bathrooms with several showers that we didn’t have to fight over for.
Breakfast = toast and other buns with Nutella. Orange juice. Milk.
Convenient location - lots of public transportation. Not too far away from and yet not too close to Las Ramblas. Area’s a little shady, but not in the mugging sense. If you are female, you will get whistles and hollering.
There was a security issue when we stayed there. Even though there’s a door code and a door person, it’s not foolproof. A woman was using her laptop in the common room, turned her head to speak to someone, and it was gone. These folks are STEALTHY. They snuck in with a group of unsuspecting backpackers and grabbed it.
Here’s a clue that’s applicable for traveling, in general. Don’t leave your belongings unattended for even a SECOND. The large window makes it so that anything going on in the lounge can be easily spotted from the outside, and they were probably watching the woman very closely with her laptop before they snuck in.
Parque del Retiro - Withdrawal
Puerta de Alcalá s/N, parc, Madrid
26-06-2008
The “Central Park” or “Golden Gate Park” of Madrid, El Retiro is the perfect spot to either spend all day in or as a pit stop in a day of museum-hopping/sightseeing. It’s beautiful and well-maintained. On a weekend, it’s perfect for people-watching.
Best of all, it’s free for all to enjoy.
During the late spring through early fall months, there are also concerts in the park.
