    Sherpas

This is a delivery service covering most of central Shanghai offering food delivery from many restaurants, cafes and delis around Shanghai.

Sherpas is a life-saver for many foreigners who cannot speak Chinese but want some food relatively quickly. For me, it is a great alternative to the usual suspects of KFC, McDonalds et al, when the heavens open across Shanghai, and you can’t bear to leave your flat. It is also useful for those who have limited choice in the area of Shanghai that they live.

The choice on offer is varied and of good quality. My favourites include Vedas, an Indian restaurant, and New Age Veggie. The service is efficient and friendly and you can order in English or Chinese, by MSN or phone.

My only gripe, and the reason for not reaching five stars, is the fact that delivery charge can be as much as 45MRB, depending on where you live in relation to the restaurant.

    Yu Garden

1pxt tomgurney last updated on 24-03-2009:

The area around Yu Garden has a number of tourist spots, so i would leave a few hours to take everything in.

The architecture around this area is beautiful and well worth a visit, but i would suggest going at non-peak times if possible. I went during Saturday afternoon and felt like i was in a Chinese Rugby scrum. There are also some interesting cheap food stalls to try out. Fried Tofu for example may poison the Shanghai air, but is a tasty snack to eat.

    Cu Chi tunnels

This was a good day trip, a little way from Saigon. In the morning we went to the interesting Temple, see photos. After that we got a tour of the interesting tunnels, plus the opportunity to fire an AK47 which was great fun.

The tunnels were ingeniously designed and an interesting way to experience the Vietnam War. Its one of the main trips to do in Saigon, and worth the trip. I found the war museum in the city a little too sombre, but this was more fun. Perhaps more suited for kids than the museum.

    Chenghuangmiao

1pxt tomgurney last updated on 22-11-2008:

Chenghuangmiao area is the oldest city area in Shanghai. When the govenment decided to rebuild it to a Chinese traditional shopping area, many citizens who had being living there for generations had to move away, and now most of them live in Pudong new district

I found this area of Shanghai quite interesting as there were many things to see in this part. Best known is Chenghuangmiao, or 'Temple of the City God’ which is a good place to both shop and enjoy traditional Chinese architecture.

Among the highlights is a traditional Teahouse and several fish ponds surrounding attractive buildings. There are also some nice places to eat some local snacks such as Fried Tofu and Barbecue Squid.

The popularity of this place, though, was also its downfall when i visited. There were so many people in the tight streets that we moved on after an hour to less popular sites close by. I would therefore recommend coming here in the week instead, if you have the choice.

    Taipingqiao Park

1pxt tomgurney last updated on 21-11-2008:

Yet another park in this area of Shanghai, but one of the better ones, certainly. It’s center piece is a long, snaking lake which is lined by pretty potted plants. There are also plenty of shrubs dotted about to offer a little secluded moment with a loved one.

Due to its location near the Memorial House of the First National Congess of the Communist Party, though, it is very popular and offers little chance for respite.

Still, pretty none-the-less and worth checking out if you’re in this area for any of the other tourist attractions.
