The Hummingbird Bakery - South Kensington

Found the cake to be dry, the icing to have shortening in it that gives that roof of the mouth coating blach and pretty darn expensive. Wasn’t impressed. Just good marketing, lucky timing, and awesome location.

Being an American, when I came over here I was in search of the perfect cake. It’s my vice – birthday & wedding cake, my favorite. But what was this hard sugar paste they covered all their cakes with here? And why can’t even buy cake mix here (although that has changed and now you can buy 1 flavor!) Most of my international friends agree that cake icing here is excessively sweet. Not everyone has the time for making cake. Finally, I found that waitrose made a tasty cupcake with American-style icing. Still, the cake was dry, the icing though flavorful, was artificial, and left my tongue coated with vegetable fat. Then I heard of hummingbird café. I thought it was a dream come true, until I tasted; cake-dry, icing-tasteless, price–stupid. Luckily, I happened upon a girl shopping for supplies and fell in love with her cupcakes. Not just was I thrilled with the fact that she was a die-hard vegetarian who used only free-range and organic ingredients, but her price is nothing compared to the rest of the rip-off ventures popping up and around. As for the taste, well that’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout! Moister than moist, (try her double chocolate chip made with Green and Black’s 80% cocoa)! Love the icing, just like mom’s (butter, sugar, skim milk, vanilla). Finally! Hope she’s be able to compete with the numerous copycat cupcakes popping around with big budgets. Only we can help.
Bar Rumba - Soho

The description of Bar Rumba on their site, left me with the impression that there was the potential for dancing there. Instead we found the need for coffee. The music is chill and eclectic, but better suited for dining or lounging. Unfortunately, they turn the music up louder and louder in hopes to get the party started, which leaves no ability to talk and no desire to dance, so the crowd is left with just staring at the DJ or their drink. When I asked if they would be playing dance music anytime soon, because I could not bare another hour of waiting for something interesting to happen, the DJ said angrily, “this is dance music.” I displayed the backdrop of people standing and staring off into space, with not one even bobbing their head and said, “I don’t think so.” It was extremely boring, empty at 1am still and trying to cause a buzz outside by making a line - hoping for the illusion of desirability. They’ll need a lot more magic for that to happen.

A beautiful Thai restaurant that invested tons into a luxurious an colorful decor, along with outside calming fountains, statues, flowers and ambiance. Staff are meticulous, and even a little overly polite - worth every pence of service charge and more. Food is very good, a little slow, but it’s made perfectly and freshly for each request. Would give 5 stars, but still think portions are a small for the price. But they have a wonderful 5.95 lunch deal and a 8.98 dinner deal Mon-Sun. Close walking distance from Parson’s Green Tube Station as well as Putney Underground Tube. Bus 22 takes you directly to their door at Munster Bus stop. A perfect place to take a date, and for clean sticklers. Huge attention to detail. For their sake hope more people get to know this little hidden treasure exists.

Very elegant, yet non-precocious place. Staff and Manager dedicated to making it a good night for you. The front door is a little too eager to be choosy, but if you have a problem ask for the owner, he’ll take care of it for you. Drink prices are average. No one is trying to grind you from behind. Lighting is perfect. Effort is put into the decor to exude luxury. Music is chill-out and up-to-date creative, easy to talk over. Free on Fridays before 11 if send them your names by email.

The best Indian food I’ve ever had throughout the world. Just as important, is the fact that the owner will make sure the dish is to your liking, and will not stop trying until it’s perfect for you. The best chefs. Brought Indian friends from all over the world, each one convinced it’s better than their mom made. If you like, tasty, healthy, interesting, authentic Indian food, at an awesome price, you won’t find better in banglatown, or any other town.
