Hong Kong - Reading

13 Maiden Lane Centre, Reading, Berkshire RG6 3HD

08-12-2011

This is my local takeaway and it is always my family’s first choice for when we want a treat. It suits everyone, whether you fancy Chinese food, fish and chips, or a burger, it has a lovely selection of all of them.
The only thing that would make it better for me would be a larger selection of vegetarian options, but thats only because I am such a fussy eater!
It is lovely and clean and welcoming, with plenty of seating.
The staff are always friendly and efficient, and the food is always steaming hot and delicious. The prices are great too!

Hair of the Dog - Burnham-on-Sea

48 High Street, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset TA8 1PD

04-10-2011

I actually live 130 miles away from Hair of the Dog, but my teenage sons insist on only having their hair cut there! so whenever we are visiting family in Burnham on Sea we always make a trip into town for haircuts.
There is always a really lovely, friendly atmosphere and lots of laughter and chatting! I would recommend Hair of the Dog to everyone. Thanks guys!

The Funicular Railways - Bergamo

Citta Alta, Bergamo

17-01-2009

I was surprised at how lovely this is, it is really well maintained and kept lovely and clean. Best of all you can use it in the price of the day travel ticket around Bergamo, so for just 2.50 you can jump on and off the buses and use the funicular as much as you like for 24 hours, what a bargain.
There was only a small queue to go up to Citta Alta so we got straight on, it was a little bit scary bearing in mind the extreme angle at which you travel, but there are seats and plenty of things to hang on to. The views were just stunning, you can see for miles. It is only a short journey, just seven minutes to get to the top, and seven minutes back down again, so we went twice, just to get another look at the wonderful views. It was just a shame the driver was such a grump.

slimming world - Lower Earley

loddon valley gym, lower earley, Reading, Berkshire RG6 5GA

17-01-2009

Slimming World is a weight loss club held in various locations all over the country, I signed up to the group near me, held at the loddon valley gym in Lower Earley, on my mum’s say so, as she lost 3 stone at her local club.
The lady who runs the group, Claire, is absolutely wonderful, having lost a lot of weight herself she knows exactly how it feels and is happy to offer help, support and understanding, even via telephone and e-mail.
The other people in group are the friendliest bunch of people as well, everyone is going through the same thing so there is a lot of support from everyone.
Its a greatplace to go, even just for the social side of it, losing weight is just a bonus.

Silver Pub - Milan

Viale Brianza 19, 20127 Milano

17-01-2009

very pretty little pub/bar/restaurant, not in the nicest of areas but very nicely presented with a front terrace behind some lovely shrubbery, so you can pretend you are in a nicer part of town if you want.
Inside is really quaint and decorated like an english pensioner’s front room, lots of flowery wallpaper and chintz, but very friendly.
The owner speaks fairly good english and is very welcoming, there wasn’t anything vegetarian on the menu so he made something specially for us and went out of his way to make sure we felt welcomed and happy.
The only downside is that it was very expensive for what it was.

seven red roses - Lower Earley

Maiden Place, Lower Earley, Reading, Berkshire RG6 3HD

17-01-2009

The Seven Red Roses Pub is on the edge of the carpark, next to the little parade of shops in Maiden Place, Lower Earley.
Its seems to be a 'locals’ pub, you see the same croud in there night after night, and can be slightly intimidating to walk into for the first time, but once you have been a couple of times it feels warm and friendly.
They often have really good 'beer and curry’ nights that appear to be good value, but unfortunately nothing for vegetarians.
They also have regular quiz nights, and big screens for when the rugby/football is on.

virgillio Hotel - Milan

Milano

16-01-2009

This place was such a disappointment, it was grubby and dirty and actually quite expensive for what it was.
Everything seemed to be old and falling apart, and not in a good way.
The staff were rude and sullen, and the room itself wasn’t clean, there was no toilet paper, and the window wouldn’t shut properly so it was absolutely freezing.
The hotel is very close to the station, but not in a very nice area, it is next to a porn shop, and the whole street is covered in grafitti.
There were people shouting and making a lot of noise outside all night.
It was the worst nights sleep I have had in a very long time.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - Milan

Piazza del Duomo, 20121 Milano

16-01-2009

Another beautiful building in milan, really impressive architecture and expensive shops well beyond my pricerange but I do find it amusing watching the 'posh’ people going from shop to shop with armfuls of bags, oh to stand in their shoes for a day.
There are some really lovely glass ceilings and sculptures to look at, just be careful not to walk into the back of the person in front of you as you wander around in awe.
Its just such a shame that in all this beauty they have decided it to be a good idea to put in a mcdonalds.

Duomo di Milano - Milan

Piazza del Duomo, 20122 Milano

16-01-2009

Wow, wow, wow! This place is just breathtaking. It looms out of the sky at you as you walk up the steps out of the metro. I simply couldn’t believe the size of it, and the beauty. The outside is white marble and covered in the most intricate carvings, there are statues everywhere, and it seems to jut out in all directions.
Unfortunately it was snowing while we were there and so we were unable to climb to the top (in the guards words “ice, you slip, you fall, you die”) but I am sure the view from the top is incredible, so much so that I have already booked a trip back to see it in better weather.
The only negative is that there are lots and lots of people trying to get money out of you, they throw seed on you as you walk past so the pigeons land on you, then they hassle you for money, there were plenty of police around keeping an eye on them though.
All in all, stunning, I can’t wait to go back.

Castello Sforzesco - Milan

Piazza Castello, Milano

16-01-2009

I was surprised at how beautiful this building is in real life, pictures just don’t seem to do it justice. Its huge and really tall, and when we were there, it was covered in christmas lights.
It is really easy to get to, not far from the Duomo and the public transport in Milan is brilliant and so easy to use. You do need to cross a fairly busy road to get to it though.
While we were in Milan it was quite snowy and the wonderful big fountain out the front of the castle was frozen over, along with a lot of the footpath, so watch your step!
Definitely worth a visit, I just wish I had had more time to explore it more thoroughly.
