W M Morrison Supermarkets - Bulwell

Leen Drive, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG6 8EP

22-08-2010

A little smaller than some, but I really like Morrisons. Their prices are very reasonable and the range is good. They are expanding quickly as a brand, and the fresh fish department is the best I have seen in any supermarket locally.

Megabowl - Nottingham

Redfield Way, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG7 2UW

22-08-2010

At some point in the last few years, bowling became very expensive. I don't know why, maybe it's the electricty bill from all the unnecessary (though admitedly atmospheric) flashing lights. The food and drink is not of great quality, but it is what it is. At least it's a bit more active than the cinema, though neither are 'cheap' options. Try and get a voucher for money off, if you can.

Thorntons - Nottingham

11 Victoria Centre, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 3QF

22-08-2010

This is only a small place with quite a limited range, so sometimes you can go in looking for something quite specific, but be disappointed. On a busy day, (Easter, Valentine's day, Christmas) it can get very busy and be quite a squeeze, so I suppose the question is... is it worth it? You only have to look at their truffles to know the answer to that one!

Ilkeston Library - Ilkeston

Market Place, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 5RN

This is a good library, with lots of clearly marked departments. The childrens' are is the best, in my opinion, as the range is much larger than anticipated and accomodates all ages groups.

Eastwood Library - Nottingham

Wellington Place, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG16 3GB

22-08-2010

This place has recently undergone a makeover, which has made it look much more inviting. I would actually go as far as to say that I prefer this to Nottingham Central Library. It doesn't always look like it has the range of books (it specialised in local history) but having said that, I've never not been able to find a book. If there is something you want, but can't find, they'll order it for you. In the summer holidays there are often a lot of children/ teenagers playing on the computers and making a lot of fuss. It's not a bit problem as the staff handle them very well, and there used to be a children's play area with toys and books in, though I'm not sure if that's still there now. Overall, very good.

Nottingham Central Library - Nottingham

3 Angel Row, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 6HL

I'm a big fan of Nottingham Library, mainly because you can't beat what they offer- access to a wealth of information on almost any subject you can imagine... for free! Whilst studying for my A levels, I was advised to go and look at their video collection for some cultural films- they were brilliant! It's easy to become a little engrossed by it all, and also to develop an uncanny blindness towards the book you want (even if it is staring you right in the face). The staff are friendly and patient (I couldn't do their job with some of the bizarre requests I heard whilst in there). Clearer signage and a better interior would do wonders for its image, but then again, it's done very well, being run on public funds... Funds that had been directed towards a rather unsightly concrete paving 'redevelopment' just across the road.

Sun Inn - Eastwood

6 Derby Road, Eastwood, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG16 3NT

Unfortunately, this place has become the haunt of some of the less savoury members of the local community. You might argue that it isn't the landlord/lady's fault if her customers are questionable, but in my opinion, it just brings the whole place down. Anything that it does have going for itself is completely eclipsed by the fact that you wouldn't want to take your children or mother-in-law there for lunch or even a quick drink. Such a shame, as a facelift and a rethink could do a lot for this rundown shack.

Sainsburys has a wide range of specialty foods such as milk free nut free and wheat or gluten free compared to other big supermarkets I think it's the best for speciality foods although morrisons also do speciality ranges but they don't do nearly as many they do milk free ice cream aswell and I think if you had an allergy or intolerance I would definatly suggest you went to sainsburys

Came for a lunch buffet: £4.99 each. Quite a limited range but all delicious and varied. Vegetarian options also available. Service is very good. Recommended.

Living Gardens - Saxilby

Riverside Skellingthorpe Road, Saxilby, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN1 2LR

21-08-2010

This is a great garden centre/ aggregate wholesaler, based on the outskirts of Saxilby. In addition to the graden centre itself, it boasts a nursery (plant, not child!), landscape centre and lovely little cafe (with a five star hygiene award and Pensioners' lunch discount on a Tuesday). Every Tuesday at 12:30, a free coach service runs from from Saxilby Village Hall car park to Living Gardens and returns at 1:30, for those without transport.

The garden centre itself has all kinds of gifts, garden furniture, BBQs, gardening tools, ornaments and seasonal decorations on offer, including the largest Christmas trees I have EVER seen, in the winter months. The staff are helpful and very friendly, and the prices are reasonable. The Garden Centre is all on one floor and caters for those with disabilities/ in wheelchairs.

This would be perfect for anyone looking for a lovely day out or needing to source gardening aggregates, paving, tools and gifts. They also offer advice, top tips, as well as the occassional seasonal demonstration. Highly recommended.
