Somerfield Stores - Sheffield

849 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8SD

29-10-2008

I shop here because it’s the most convenient supermarket for my house. It has a good selection, but isn’t very cheap. Fruit and veg is pretty expensive, but there isn’t a good fruit and veg shop nearby - closest one is probably broomhill or crookes. For meat, there are some great butchers on Sharrowvale road which are much cheaper.

It’s easy and convenient though, and often has a good selection of things on offer or in the discount sections

Subway - Sheffield

100 Devonshire Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7SF

29-10-2008

I still don’t understand the Subway fascination!!! This is on a nice street with a load of independant shops, and some bars serving great, fairly cheap food - yet people still come here.
Subway isn’t actually that healthy! Just cos you can see the sals and the bread coming out of the oven, the bread and sauces are still full of sugar.
The Subway influx has put some great sandwich shops out of business (particularly a great one just round the corner on West Street!), and I don’t get it.

My advice would be to give this place a miss and go get some nice, good quality food across the road in The Old House, or a bit further along in Bungalows and Bears.

The Harley - Sheffield

334 Glossop Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2HP

A bit of a 'love it’ or 'hate it’ place. It’s basically a pub/bar, with a dancefloor and decks at one end, a load of sofas, and pool tables at the other end.

They play a wide wide range of music, with different genres almost every friday and saturday. It’s usually good quality music though with a packed dancefloor. Good cheap drinks and generally just a good laugh.

That said, if you get dragged there and don’t like the music then it ain’t much fun!

Just check out what they’re playing, and if it’s you’re thing, pay you’re £3 entrance and you’ll be there all night.
I think it stays open until about 4am

Dare Cafe - Leeds

49 Otley Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS6 3AB

29-10-2008

Great place! Really good, cheap food, and a great atmosphere.
There’s a good range of Italian and Mexican food, as well as sandwiches and soups.

There’s also a great little bar downstairs, which still seems to be relatively undiscovered by the Student hoardes of Headingley. Really cool little chilled place with good music. I don’t think it’s advertised from the outside, so people just think it’s a restaurant, but just go in the door, go straight ahead and down the stairs. Love it!

Indian Chef - Sheffield

176 Crookes, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1UH

29-10-2008

In the past, I’ve had some fantastic meals at Indian Chef. We went the other day though and it was pretty disappointing.

They were very very busy, which may explain it - and we were in a large group so they had a lot of meals to prepare at one time. It seemed like my curry (Lamb Madras) had been sat on a hot plate for some time before it was served though - it wasn’t very hot, and the sauce was starting to thicken up on top. Also just didn’t taste too exciting!

Other people in the group really enjoyed their meals though, and it’s a good cheap option, with a pub (The Ball) right across the road. It’s also a BYO. We had popadums with pickles, then everybody had a curry with nans, chapatis and rice to share and it all came to just £10 each.

Despite not being a great experience this time, I’ll definately go again.

pho 68 - Sheffield

175 London Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 4NZ

29-10-2008

I went here a few weeks ago after numerous recommendations, but had a mixed experience.

To be honest, I think we just didn’t choose our dishes too well.

The pho was huge, and very authentic, whilst the chicken noodles were pretty boring and bland, with no sauce. Still a very large portion though. We also had pak choi with garlic and oyster sauce - not on the menu, but I love this dish and they were happy to make it for us.

Looking around, the food on other tables looked great, so i’ll probably give it another try.

Pretty casual atmosphere, like many of the places on london Road.

Botanical Gardens - Sheffield

Clarkehouse Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2LN

29-10-2008

The newly renovated Botanical Gardens are great!
They’re doing a great job of maintaining the gardens throughout, and the gorgeous glasshouses at the top have a wonderful selection of plants from all around the world.

Very peaceful, with large open grassy spaces as well as a network of footpaths around the gardens.

You can now get married here too!

Winter Garden - Sheffield

Surrey Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 1XZ

29-10-2008

Great addition to Sheffield.

The Winter Gardens and Peace gardens are a lovely place to wander round in your lunchbreak if you work in town, or just relax a way from the shops at the weekend. Also provides a quick route through the Milennium Galleries to Hallam Uni or Sheffield Station.

Sheffield needs more modern architecture like this!

Revolution - Sheffield

1 The Plaza Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4JB

29-10-2008

Depends what you’re into really!?
Quite a cheesy place, but good if you’re out for a big drunken night. Pretty loud and packed out at the weekends.

Well located to do a bit of a crawl round the other bars, with a good selection of more chilled independant bars, and louder studenty places all within 100m or so.

Bolehills Park - Sheffield

Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1QW

29-10-2008

Great park at the far end of Crookes. It’s got it all!! Crown Green Bowling, footie pitches, tennis court, basketball court, bmx track, and the best sledging runs in Sheffield (if we ever get any more snow???)

Also great views out across Hillsborough to the countryside.
