I stumbled upon this by accident yesterday whilst walking along Theobald Road. The little placard with 'afternoon tea’ written on it was all the invite I needed and a quick peek into the establishment itself gave off the most amazing views of bountiful looking cakes and other delicious looking sweet treats.

The place itself was fairly quiet on a Friday afternoon but still buzzy as there just happened to be a film crew and a photographer in situ (random but nice).

There is seating for about 20 or so I would say indoors and outside seating consisting of 2 round garden tables + chairs.

I went for the Afternoon tea as I am a cream tea freak and have been known to engineer a trip to Cornwall just for this! I loved the presentation of my tea, the jam came in its own little quaint glass jar with a spoon (more than enough for the 2 scones it comes with) and there was the most amazingly luscious tasting clotted cream on the side served nicely chilled. The scones were so light and quite sweet and not at all stody or rock-cake looking (gosh, does that make any sense!). As mentioned I LOVE cream tea and I am not known to ever leave any but I was so full up on the beauty of it all that I left half a scone in the end - very very filling for something so lightly baked. As a non caffeine drinker, it was nice to have a choice of herbal and fruit tea on offer, though a customer did mention that the coffee was lush. My word not his!

A birthday cake made to order was picked up whilst I was there and it looked dreamy and I think a future cake order is imminent.

On a girly note, I adored the wallpaper that backed the serving area; tres chic and yes, very Parisian Oui! The whole place is cute and twee and definitely worth visiting so make sure you do. It would also be great for a birthday party/lunch for a treasured daughter/little sister/god-daughter methinks. Or at least I think so!

The nearest tube station is Chancery Lane but Farringdon is not that much further.

    Miso Noodle Bar

1pxt woodyrocks last updated on 09-01-2009:

This place is just as perfect for those long-drawn out w/e lunches with friends as it is those hasty mid-week family dinner grab. The food is cheap, tasty and the portions generous. I love their seafood mix and would heartily recommend it, the spicy beef noodle stock is also very nice.

The saki is dangerous - I was spinning out last time I had some so unless you are sharing, don’t attempt to finish one on your own

It is well situated and can be found at the lower end of the high street (closer to the train station than the odeon). There is also ample paid parking on church road opposite. You can also take out which I was not aware of but with food being cooked this fast why bother!

Starters, Main x 3, juice, water and 2 x glasses of red wine came in under £35 so all in all very good value for money. The manager is also very very nice and the staff are generally attentive. The only cons I can note is that there is no hot water in the toilets.

In fact, I think I might just find myself back there for lunch tomorrow or is twice in one week overkill I wonder?!

Hope to see you in there.

This wannabe gastro-pub is located right opposite Herne hill train station and is well placed to pop into for a pint or two whilst waiting for a connecting train into town.

On the whole the ambience is a chilled one and the crowd themselves are faily relaxed. I have done lunch, evening drinks and sunday dinner in here and I have to say that it is quite a soul-less place that really has no charm about it. So whilst it is more than suitable a place to while away a short amount of time I wouldn’t say it was the most pleasant of places to spend your time.

The staff seem to have a hard time understanding and making themselves understood so you might need to repeat your order a few times. I should warn you that they are honestly the most uniterested bunch I have ever come across.

The Sunday roast is VILE and I wouldn’t recommend it but they do have a decent range of beer & lager on tap including my ever favourite; fruli and for that reason alone it surely deserves a star!

    Pizza Express

1pxt woodyrocks last updated on 24-11-2008:

Was at a loss as to where to have lunch on Saturday and Nando’s was out of the question as I had left my reward card at home (!) so with Woody, my brother and his g/f in tow with found ourselves in Pizza Express. I like it for being far enough out of Croydon town centre so that it is not easily swarmed by shoppers seeking respite, this allows for relatively low-key dining with low noise levels to boot.

The place was about half full at 3.15pm and we were seated to the right of the restaurant with full street view owing to the glass fronted front. This would normally be a nice distractionary way of whiling away time but tbh all I felt was a chill that the double glazing could not mask so as the winter months set in, my advise is not to sit anywhere near the windows.

Woody opted for the kids menu and the rest of us went with the main menu including entres and desserts. I normally have a salad but this time round my eye was drawn to a seperate menu flyer detailing a collaboration with a chef named Theo Randall but it was the picture of a delicious looking prawn covered pizza that had me salivating. I orderd 'Theo’s Gamberettini’ which was a tad costlier than the others but it was worth it and I am sure I would have wolfed it down even quicker had I not been hindered by a fresh set of newly fitted braces! My brother created his own pizza and his g/f added toppings to a standard pizza so you can’t say they are not accomodating to taste.

The service was slighly laboured in parts and there was one occassion that I had to go and find a server to speed up the task of ordering desserts. I fear this was our fault for choosing to sit in the corner out of direct sight lines of staff. Another cause for complain would be that I ordered a glass of wine that never showed up but was present on the bill. This was duly removed once mentioned but no apology as such was offered.

You can’t fault the food however and for 3 adults + a child including drinks and dessert coming in at £60 including service is frankly not that bad a deal.

  • The Montagu Pyke - Leicester Square

    The Montagu Pyke

1pxt woodyrocks last updated on 23-11-2008:

It is not the type of place you would normally find me on a Saturday night but there I was last night enjoying a couple of pints. It is very big generic wetherspoon type establishment on the Charing X road. It is not easily missed and the name is clearly signposted. There was a door-man in attendance and my bag was checked and I was not allowed to take my bottle of water in. The person I was with was made to take his hat off as well. Walking in, I could see that it was fairly busy and quite buzzy. There is a bar to the left of the floor and further to the back there is a Lloyds bar section with seating for dining but you could also sit anywhere else and order food from the bar I think.

There are two large screens and both were playing standard pop music videos. There is also an upper floor with more seatings and the toilets are also upstairs.

Upon walking to the bar I could see leffe in the fridge and wherever there is leffe there is bound to be fruli! There were a wide selection of beer on tap and lots of other choices of drinks including cocktails. The prices very very cheap for that part of town (a pint of fruli and one of Kronneburg came to £6.50).

All in all not a bad place to spend an hour or so and not as soulless as one would imagine.
