English Books and British Foods - Altona

Stresemannstr. 169-167, 22769 Hamburg

10-02-2009

I discovered English Books through a sticker on the back of the book of a friend who went back to America and am eternally thankful.
The shop has a real quaint, cosy English atmosphere and everything in it is rather eccentric, including the owner, a funny Englishman who’s been in Germany for over two decades.
Despite the sea of books across 3 shop units his literary knowledge and capacity to know the whereabouts of every single book never ceases to amaze me. His accent, still desperately English, adds to the experience. If he is around and is not unloading a new delivery from England he will offer you a nice cup of tea and have a chat. He’s also let me make a quick phone call to a friend as I’d forgotten my mobile!
The selection of books is incredibly broad and here a warning: you could spend a whole afternoon in the shop. Whether you’re into sci-fi, drama, horror, philosophy, erotica, children’s books or the Complete Works of Shakespeare this little haven of literature and culture will tend to your needs.
AND they have English food/snacks! I can never resist the temptation of grabbing the latest creation of Cadbury or McVities and always stock up on Branston’s pickle, yummy jams, cream crackers, bake beans and salt & vinegar crisps? It’s like taking a little hop to the UK without leaving Hamburg. Really rather magical…
