Masala Zone Restaurant - Soho
9 Marshall Street, Soho, London W1F 7ER

(updated on 22-02-2011)
A definite no no.
A while back I don't doubt that the quality of the food was good but the freshness of the food is somewhat questionable, probably due to the fact that the restaurant was pretty much deserted.
On entering we had to wait in the entrance for 15 minutes (timed - no exaggeration) before being seated. Fine. Bad service doesn't particularly bother me - if the food is good, I couldn't care less.
My friends and I ordered vegetarian thalis. On reading the terrible reviews before my visit I had braced myself for the worst, but it was worse than I could imagine. The starters were okay albeit overpriced but as they were cold starters it was bearable.
The thali was the worst indian food I was ever tasted.
The poppadums within 1 minute had become soggy and there was no liquid on my plate but they tasted stale and were not crisp in the slightest, instead they had the texture of wet cardboard. The curries were COLD and I don't mean tepid, I mean COLD! They were completely lacking spice which is fine, I don't particularly want to eat food which has me running around screaming for water, but there was absolutely no flavour. So I had been presented with poor service, stale poppadoms, old cold tastless curries and at a price which is certainly not unbeatable!!
Don't make the mistake I did in just taking a chance, because I can assure you it will not pay off!
Safadi Express - Holborn

This is my second favourite restaurant.
I went there recently as a result of a reccomendation from my sister andI was not dissapointed.
Sited opposite Holborn station wiith a small shop front, I expected a poky little dirty restaruant inside.
Quite the contrary. The interior was well designed, clean and quite spacious.
When seated there is a clear view of the chefs and it is exciting to be able to watch them preparing the food for you!
I ordered a starter of moutabal baba ganoush to chare between myself and three others and the meal deal (a falafel wrap which comes with fries and a bottle of water) for £5.95. The moutabal baba ganoush was the WONDERFUL WONDERFUL roasted aubergine dish. Unlike other restaurants which "claim" to roast the aubergine, this place really did. The smoky flavour was delicious and mixed with yoghurt and tahini it was an absolutely amazing dish. Not only that, but it comes with a whole basket of soft thin light lebanese bread!!! For such a cheap price I had expected fast food standard meal, but this was not the case. The wrap came enclosed in a paper bag so that the wrap stayed hot. Inside it was was stuffed with the perfect amount of falafels with tomatoes and salad. The wrap was not a chewy doughy tortilla wrap, but a soft light one made from lebanese bread. The wrap contained parsely and although I HATE parsley I still give this restaurant 5 stars since the rest of it was perfect! The wrap was the perfect size leaving you comfortably full. The bowl of fries accompanying the falafel was massive!! And although the fries were fries, not home made chips, they were surprisingly nice! They were not fried in hydrogenated fat and they did not leave you with the horrible after taste that mcdonalds chips leave. Service was good and I can't fault the experience!! Excellent!
Asha's Indian Bar and Restaurant - Birmingham
12 - 22 Newhall Street,, Birmingham, West Midlands B3 3LX

My family and I travelled from London to visit this restaurant to celebrate my sister's graduation.
What with the famous name, and the extortianate prices, we expected a wonderful indian meal.
Sadly, this was not the case.
We ordered the roasted aubergine dish, which they had made a special point of, writing some information about how it was their mother's favourite dish. The aubergine was NOT roasted, so essentialy all you were paying for and getting was mashed aubergine, cooked on the stove.
The same tomatoe-y (tomato puree) sauce was used for every dish causing them to taste the same with no variation.
When booking, we were told we would have to vacate the table within two hours. On arriving at the restaurant it was EMPTY, completely empty, without one single table occupied (no exaggeration).
When paying such high prices, one expects good food. The food was bland and did not taste fresh.
One also expects a certain ambiance. The restaurant was plain as an ordinary restaurant with absolutely nothing even remotely special about the outside or interior.
I give this restaurant one because the paneer was soft and of a good quality and the naan was of average standard although I can definitely get better from my local takeaway.
I am indian and I can tell you with a high level of certainty, this is NOT good indian food.
Antiga Confeitaria de Belém - Santa Maria de Belém
Rua de Belém, 84 84, 1300-085 Lisboa

After having read all the hype for these custard tarts: from qype, the guardian and blogs in general, I was really looking forward to trying these custard tarts. The pastry was not light and crumbly, but papery with a filo-like texture. The custard filling was far too sweet and eggy with a lumpy texture, not smooth. Flavour was lacking, as the sugar was too overpowering and the lumpy consistency did not make it enjoyable to eat.
Nevertheless, I would still recommend going there, as they were quite nice and if you have a sweet tooth you will definitely enjoy it, however not for me.
I should say that although my family and I were not too thrilled with the custard tarts, they loved this pain au raisin type thing, with chocolatese and walnuts. You should definitely try this; you two may even prefer it to the custard tarts!!
Restaurante Terra - Lisbon

The one star awarded to this restaurant in my view is only because it is compulsory to give one or more stars.
The food was absolutely rubbish.
For 15.90 euros (the price for either lunch or dinner buffet), dessert was not included and neither were drinks!
So for 15.90, you would assume that there would be a wide choice of cold and hot dishes.
The buffet had a limited choice and what dishes they offered, were mainly cold salads. The food lacked any flavour and there were only 3-4 hot dishes.
You were not even paying for the ambience of the restaurant, as the interior was nothing special.
The biggest regret of my holiday.
GreenApple I always go to Terra when I'm in Lisbon and I feel either you were VERY unlucky or you are talking about some other restaurant. Not only because I've never had anything short of delicious but because the buffet you describe is nothing like Terra's. Terra's buffet is by far the most varied I've ever tasted, not only in Portugal but on my many voyages. I'd say normal is 8-10 hot dishes and maybe 20-25 salads, plus soup, many times pizza, quiche etc. I think this is probably an unfair/misplaced review.

x-dj-x I am not a particularly harsh food critic and so if the food/food choice was even just average I would have been satisfied. However especially considering the price I felt cheated!!
I don't feel the review was unfair given my experience and so they must have just had an off day. There were no way near 20- 25 salads or quiche! That sounds yummy!!

Tesco - Harrow

This store offers a wide variety of food and drink. It has everything you would need for your main shop. As well as the usual groceries, there are aisles selling CD’s, games, DVD’s and books.
However, the staff are far from friendly. Particularly the staff who are shopping for those who have ordered online-they are aggressive and often too much in a hurry to show some consideration to other shoppers. Sometimes the checkout assistants do not award the points when re-using bags even when requesting them.
I would advise you not to go on a Saturday as this is the busiest time.

Punjabi Kitchen - London

The food took an extraodinary long time to come
The meat (kebabs) is cooked in an open kitchen
all the mains tasted pretty much the same
and the starters tasted factory made
not the worst restaurant
worth a try
but not the best
relatively cheap is the best thing
