bijou deli - Dublin
47 Highfield Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6 Dublin

(updated on 24-06-2010)
I've just bought a chocolate muffin from this place, so I had the idea, why not tell people about it?
This place is a small little bakery on the corner of Highfield Road and Orwell Road. It is charming on the outside, with a blue and white canopy over the door. In front window you can see the display of fresh bread and pastries. It is small inside, but filled with lots of nice things.
My famiy regularly buy pastries here e.g. croissants, danishes, muffins etc. These are delicious. My chocolate muffin today was creamy chocolatey, with large chocolate chips. There are also big fancy cakes as well as brownies and cookies.
They sell some ready made meals which could be handy if you're coming home from work and you're hungry but don't feel like cooking. You can get rolls or sandwiches made up here to your liking too.
It's worth a visit. We tend to go on Saturday mornings, although it can be busy. As the shop is small the queue stretches out the shop onto the path, which shows you how popular it is!
Rathgar Thai & Chinese Take Away - Dublin

This hairstudio is one of the best around. Although expensive, you pay for a great service.
Firstly t is nice and clean, any hair that drops to the floor is immediately swept up. It’s decor is not too fussy and not too bland.
The staff are very friendly. I personally prefer not to chat when getting my hair done. They don’t mind this and leave me to read my magazine. However some people are interested in chatting and they will oblige to this too. Whatever suits you.
They are all very good hairdressers. If you are getting your hair washed it is like a massage. They then cut your hair exactly how you like it or if you want some new hair style they can give you ideas. They always ask if you’d like mousse or serum rubbed into your hair afterwards.
The service is very quick also. They don’t have long queues, you are seen within 5 minutes of your arrival. I get in and out of there in 20 minuts for a wash and cut.
It is cheaper for kids and they do student discounts on Tuesdays. For everyone else it is a bit expensive but I would recommend it for the service provided.

Rathgar Junior School - Dublin
62-63 Grosvenor Road, Rathmines, 6 Dublin
11-06-2008
If you want your child to have happy memories of their school days, Rathgar Junior School is the place to send them.
It has a homely feel, not just because it is made up of two houses connected, but because of the community within the school. Everyone knows everyone elses name and the teachers are friends with the students, rather than enemies.
The school has great sporting achievements. It focuses on hockey in the winter term and has won both the 6th class boys and girls cups many times before. It has produced two Irish u16 players in recent years. In summer tennis, cricketa and rounders are played.
It is a small school, there are only eight classes, with about 22 per class. This allows the teacher greater interaction with each individual student.
RJS (it’s abbreviation) really is a home from home.
Tribeca - Dublin
65, Ranelagh, 6 Dublin
09-06-2008
This a high quality restaurant, that has a mixture of cuisines to suit everyone’s tastes.
Located in the centre of Ranelagh village, it is always busy, so I recommend a reservation. It has a lively atmosphere with makes you feel like you’re where ‘it’s happening’, the place where everyone wants to be.
The starters menu is very nice iwth a selection of soup, mussels, tortilla chips etc. But what you have to get when you go there are the Tribeca chicken wiings. These have made the restaurant famous. People even order these for main course, as they are quite ;arge. Served with celery sticks, they are so tasty!
The main courses are delicious, including steak, tagliatelle, chicken, all served with gorgeous vegetables, chips etc. The restaurant also serves lunch.
When I think of desserts in Tribeca, my mouth waters. There’s banoffee, creme brulee, rich chocolate cake and more lovely things.
People go to this restaurant for a variety of reasons; communions, birthdays, girls nights out, romantic dinners etc.
Alexandra College - Dublin
Richmond Avenue, Miltown, 6 Dublin
09-06-2008
This is a top quality school, that caters for all interests. Although a bit expensive, it is a place to consider.
The school crest is made up of four pictures; a book which represents academics; a football which represents sports; a paintbrush to represent the arts and a musical instrument to represent music. The school has great success in all of these areas.
Alex has a history of good academic results, with many previous pupils having achieved 600 points in the leaving, and many more achieveing over 500. But it’s not just results that count in Alex. The school regularly has people competing in the Young Scientist, debating competitions, mathlete competitions, Model United Nations etc. It prides itself in achieveing academic success.
In terms of sports, Alex do very well. The Senior hockey team has won 2 Senior cups in three years and was runner up this year. All other levels continue this success, the Junior As won last year, the !st years were runners up this year. The u16 soccer team reached the ALll- Ireland final where they were narrowly beaten. Cricket, basketball, tennis and athletics all have great success also.
The art department prides itself on producing budding artists. The pupils ahieve excellent results in the state exams and many have gone on to getting places in top art schools. One of the teachers is the artist Jane Bowe.
There is a large music department, with twenty seven full and part-time teachers. The instruments taught range from the piano to the basson. Pupils always achieve high results in exams.
This school really caters for all interests.
Rathgar Tennis Club - Dublin
Rathgar, 6 Dublin
09-06-2008
This is my local tennis club and I feel it is worth a mention on this website. It was actaully voted Leinster mid-size Club of the Year 2005, and was runner up in 2006.
I’ve been a member since I was about five years old. I started off having beginners lessons with my school friends. The club is very accomodating for younger ones, and the club coach Kieran is on hand to develop their interest. He takes the tennis lessons in a fun manner, not just pushing the kids to get the serve perfect, but developing their overall athletic ability, involving fun and games. Summer camps are held in the months of July and August. These are great fun, with water fights, rounders and more. All-day tennis is just too much for kids.
For teenagers there are social competitions in a round robin format in summer and winter. These allow everyone to get to know each other, while having a friendly competition. There are also teams and the coaches work hard with the people who want to seriously pursue tennis.
For adults there are teams to join. They play in leagues. There are also social evenings, with pizza afterwards.
The courts are open all the time so members can play when they like (competitively or friendly!). One of the great things is that non-members can pay a small fee and then are free to play a game.
There is something for everyone at this club.
Lawlors - Dublin
Upper Rathmines Road, Rathmines, 6 Dublin
07-06-2008
Quality. That sums up Lawlors. It is the shop that everyone in my neighbourhood frequently meets in, as they are there so often.
There is a variety of meat on sale, from chicken kebabs to sirloin steak. Meat already marinated can also be bought.
If you want to do the marinating yourself, sauces are sold for this purpose. These sauces can also be used for sandwiches, salads etc.
The staff are all very friendly and will give you suggestions for recipes, or what to serve at a dinner party if asked.
It has recently had a make over, as it used to be too small to accomodate the queue of customers. It is now spacious with the meat counter curving around the wall of the shop and the sauces on shelves opposite.
Monsoon - Dublin
306-308 Lower Rathmines Road, Rathmines, 6 Dublin
07-06-2008
Yum! That about sums up this restaurant! I love the food here, as you might guess.
Indian food can often be clumsily put together, a few pieces of meat with some supermarket sauce sploshed on. This food however, is full of flavour and spice.
As you enter, soft Indian music is playing in the background, setting you in the mood. The tables have generous space between them and the chairs are comfortable.
Poppadoms ae served immediately upon your arrival, accompanied by several dipping sauces; chutney, mint sauce etc. Be careful, these can nearly fill you up before you’ve even ordered!
On the menu there’s a range of dishes, from Roghan Josh to Crab Pepper Masala. All of these are very reasonably priced. I would recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala, or the Lamb Saagwala. There are vegetarian options also.
To accompany your meal, you can order a basket of naan bread, to soak up your sauce. I love the variety basket, as it gives you coriander, garlic and peshawari naans.
For dessert there is a selection of interesting ice creams. The most unique thing on the menu is a chocolate samosa. Instead of a samosa filled with vegetables, this is filled with Swiss chocolate chunks. Really tasty.
Monsoon also do takeaway, so you can enjoy this food in the comfort of your own home.
Alan Hannas Bookshop - Dublin
270 Lower Rathmines, Rathmines, 6 Dublin
07-06-2008
Although a little cramped, this bookshop has everything necessary to make it the old reliable.
As you enter the shop, rows of books greet you, and you know you could find anything from Harry Potter to something nobody has heard of! Anything from travel to business is here.
Down the back of the shop, there is a school books section. This is well stocked and will accomodate your needs. Rather than having to trall through all the books, if you just hand in your book list, they will have the books ready for collection and covered (€1 extra a book) in a few days. They sell Junior and Leaving Certificate papers and all sorts of copy books, hard and soft back.
Have any old school books you don’t need anymore? Alan Hannas will buy these off you, or give you a discount on the price of your new school books. You can order books online.
The shop is near Tesco and the Swan Shopping Centre, so you can get some other shopping done on a visit.
Rathgar Bookshop - Dublin
100 Rathgar Road, Rathgar, 6 Dublin
07-06-2008
This shop was voted ‘Bookseller of the Year 2005’. It is one of Dublin’s few independent bookshops.
The shop sells a variety of books, including poetry, childrens and gardening. It also sells music cds and greeting cards.
Coffee is on sale and you can go to a small garden out the back with garden tables to read your book. Authors evenings also take place, where wine is served.
The shop is run by two really nice women, who will help with any of your queries. There is a 10% reduction for three books or more, or if you are a member of a book club you also get a reduction. Ordering can be done by phone and fax also.
This place is worth a visit if for nothing more than experience a bookshop other than Easons, Dubrays, Hughes & Hughes etc.
