Knight's Templar - Holborn
95 Chancery Lane, Holborn, London WC2A 1DT
27-05-2010
This place is spacious, friendly and has a special place in my heart! I spent most Wednesday afternoons here as a student and it's got a great choice of tables and spaces - they tolerated our taking up vast amounts of space and playing cards all over the place and continue to do so!
You can also book areas.
Not open at weekends, sadly.
Also it is unfortunately a Spoons, complete with 'spoons food. Eugh. (I don't even know how they cram that many calories into things that don't even taste great). Good value drinks though and nice cocktail pitchers.
Also, the toilets are AMAZING - luxury. Although some of their wierd circular doors don't shut properly. But with sofas and mirrors who cares!

Well connected but crowded and often very complicated to change at!
CellarDoor - Holborn

A very intimate venue (it used to be a gentlemen's toilet frequented by Oscar Wilde!) this place is really atmospheric and hosts great classy events like Burlesque performers. They also have a great website with their full list of cocktails, which are pretty good and 1/3rd off before 8pm!
They have really snazzy toilets with doors which turn from transparent to opaque when you lock them, and the quirky mirrored walls are good for experimenting with photos!
The staff are friendly and there are a few snacks available too.

Beautiful station with a great range of shops for clothes, gifts and food!
London Gatwick Airport - London Gatwick

Not my favourite airport, moderate range of shops and services, but extra points for convenience as it is well-connected on road and rail, and the trains run often and to various different connections.
Jamaica Inn - Bolventor
Bolventor, Launceston, Cornwall PL15 7TS

Very disappointed.
I am not someone who is ever prepared to overpay for something, but I thought I'd make an exception in this case and pay £100 for a room.
I had to book it twice - the online enquiry form was ignored the first time. I phoned and someone helpfully told me that the four poster bed room I had wanted was in the new wing, not the old inn, was that OK? I said I'd rather have a view over the moor, and she said she'd give me a £100 room in the old building, so I was happy with that.
When I arrived I was put in the new wing with a view of the car park, and told that the old part was fully booked unless I wanted a twin room (I did not, I booked a double room). What's more, although the room had freeview, it was really nothing special and the bathtub (more pricey than a room with just a shower) was pretty small.
There was tea/coffee/hot chocolate available in the room but no herbal ones. The food in the restaurant tasted nice but there were hardly any remotely healthy options, and both of our orders were wrong (my boyfriend got a vegetable curry not a meat one and I got a burger with a bun and chips despite me following the menu's suggestion and asking for neither and just salad as an option). What's more, for a portion on the children's menu it was quite big! There was even a sign pinned to the staff area where a staff member had complained that there was nothing healthy available for them! The breakfast had some cereal but other than that just cooked breakfast available.
I'm not one to complain but this place just doesn't even make an effort - the menus and signs had some horrendous typos, I didn't feel good about any of it :-(
Don't go!
Pucellis - Padstow
South Quay, Padstow, Cornwall PL28 8AH
25-05-2010
Pucelli's benefits from a great view over the harbour and a lovely decor. The menu has a good range and fills a good niche in Padstow with its prices, as it is neither horrendously overpriced (in the vein of Rick Stein's restaurant) nor cheap and greasy like the famous traditions of pasties and chips.
The salmon pasta dish I had was nice although much too buttery for my taste, but my boyfriend's prawn pizza was delicious and very good value for money - they also have two size options for pizzas which is very welcome!
fifty five bar - Camden
31 Jamestown road, London NW1 7DB

HUGE range of cocktails and professionally made, 6 at a time - impressive to watch.
However, although the happy hour applies for a lot of time (eg. all day on Sunday), busier times will leave you struggling to be served, and the 2 for 1 offer only applies to two of the same cocktail which is disappointing.
I've tried an ice cream cocktail from there which was very good, but a fruity daquari I ordered seemed watery and was disappointing... it's worth a visit because it does impress, and I daresay that it's a great place to hang out on a Sunday in the daytime, but a crowded Saturday night might not quite seem worth the effort.
Devonshire Arms - Camden
33 Kentish Town Road, Camden, London NW1 8NL
21-05-2010
The Devonshire Arms (as this is still called to any who know it) is not quite what it used to be (it had a strict gothic/alternative dress code) but neverthless plays a GREAT mix of music, does good theme nights and pulls a good crowd. The decor is really fitting (lots of cool posters) and it's a good place to socialise if you want great music that you can still hear yourself under.
Bison & Bird - Clapham
182 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UG
21-05-2010
Really good value cocktail happy hour and a GREAT menu - I went there wanting one or two and ended up trying about 4 different ones and being extremely merry. They're delicious!
It's also spacious with a fun atmosphere and a great selection of fairly good value food too!
Andrew Hunter I must admit, Bison & Bird has gone up in my estimation since i wrote my review. It's a good place to watch sport, and you're right, cocktail happy hour is decent. I'm still not sure it would be my first port of a call on a friday night though....
