The Cambridge Barfly closed in mid 2008 and is unlikely to open again. I watched the removals people strip the PA and other kit. It wasn't the only Barfly that closed around this time. While the music venue was gaining in popularity and would often be well attended, the bar space below was a loss leader. In its time I saw Fighting With Wire, Seafood, Johnny Foreigner, The Mae Shi, Darkest Hour, Brigade, Fuck Buttons, Make Good Your Escape, and the Wrong Music guys. I'm sure there were a few others.
Good points: a venue that could attract more established bands, drinks at usual pub prices, close to where I live. Bad points: toilets (something iffy with the plumbing), low ceiling a problem if audience full of tall guys.
Barfly has brought a great new venue on the indie music scene. Its brought some great new music to Cambridge already. Its a reasonably sized place and it has a long bar with plenty of staff so you dont have to spend your night waiting. The stage is right in there with the crowd leading to an intimate feel for great musical effect. Get on the waiting list.
