This is on of the “old school” restuarants in Manchester that everyone should visit at some point in their “eating out” career

this use to be the kwok man if memory serves me right, and i’m going back some years! (about 25! suddenly feeling very old!) as we use to do the whole family meal thing here when i was a kid.

when it openned, we called it the big yang sing it was amazing! and the only chinese restaurant i remember having to queue for a table at! on a sunday.

i have returned since leaving home, and the food is always good, and the dim sum trollys are fab, (these are not always out) as i don’t speak chinese and can never remember what my parents ordered! other then the meat ball’s, for some reason i have never liked them! oh and the tripe in satay sauce! but i like the ducks feet, but not the chickens feet! oh an intestines! never even tried them! or want to!

and some other foods that i loved, but my parents wouldn’t let me have as the foods fell into the hot catagory!
chinese foods are split into hot and cold groups, so fried foods etc are hot and steamed, boiled foods are cold and then it gets really complicated as it also depends on the foods etc nothing to do with the temparature of food being served, though salads are considered the devils work!

last time i was in i met our local chinese restaurant owner, my uncle and an old boss! and none of us lived near manchester! each would have travelled well over an hour average to get to the yang sing for a meal! so i think that says it all!

The trick with Yang Sing is not to order individual dishes from the menu, rather to order the Banquet Menu and tell the staff which bits you don’t want and which bits you can’t eat. The staff are always accommodating; even if you just simply don’t want to eat the ostrich for the fourth time, they will suggest an alternative. The best thing about the menu is that while it may be pricey, it showcases some of the best and most popular dishes - particularly the scallops - and allows you to pick and choose between each.

I have been to Yang Sing approximately 8 times now and still always experience the same delight over the food and general performance and behaviour of the staff. The staff are particularly attentive and the food is always to an extremely high standard.

Moreover, going during the day provides a new type of experience. If you go to Yang Sing during lunch time, you are able to take your pick from the Dim Sum menu which provides you with a lovely selection of little bite-sized morsels, all of which, depending on your selection, should be delicious, and all for a very reasonable price for such quality.

To sum up, Yang Sing is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever been to. My father has been eating here since the 1970s when he had business in Manchester, and when he comes to visit it’s always a nice excuse to experience a 'proper’ chinese.

I’m a big fan of chinese food and was really looking forward to eating at the Yan Sing it has such a great reputation.

I’ve given it a go twice and have been disapointed twice, it obviously attracts the business suits in town and is fantastically decorated and imaculately presented but the food has failed to live up to the hype.

I want my vegetables to be fresh and crunchy and i want to be able to tell whats in the hot and sour soup (my benchmark dish;) not a lot to ask for the price they charge, its been average on both occaisons.

I’ll will end up going back again because I want it to be good and it will save me a fortune as at the moment I end up driving over to Leeds to go to Maxi’s! (if anyone can recommend somewhere closer please let me know)

A real Manchester institution, the Yang Sing may lie on the outer edge of Chinatown but is very much the jewel in its crown. It’s been serving high quality Cantonese cuisine since 1977, even surviving after a fire in 1997 which gutted its Princess Street premises and forced it into temporary accommodation for 18 months. Refurbished again in 2006, it’s now very elegantly decorated, and it’s a real class act.

The food is also very impressive. I recommend choosing their banquet option which essentially consists of two main parts. First, there are several plates of dim sum - these are little starters such as dumplings filled with pork or prawns, chicken and sweetcorn pancakes, they often serve ostrich. These dishes vary every time I’ve been here as the chefs are not afraid to try out new ideas - one of my recent faves is a deep fried red chilli pepper stuffed with chicken, I’m not usually a fan of chillis but this really works!

The second part of the banquet is the main course, usually four or five dishes put in the middle of the table to share (the larger tables usually have those rotating glass middle sections to make it easier to pass things round), with a large bowl of rice to go with them.

They are very accommodating with the choices, you can specify certain types of things you do or don’t want, for example vegetarian options, nothing too spicy or anything like that, the staff are very pleasant and efficient and nothing is too much trouble. If you choose not to go for the banquet option, there’s an extensive menu of high quality, tasty Chinese fare.

Yes it’s expensive, but you do get what you pay for - it’s a been a family favourite for a number of years for big birthdays and anniversaries and things. I wouldn’t go every week as I would be broke in no time, but for a really special occasion there are few places better than this in Manchester. Highly recommended….

The best cantonese restaurant I have ever been to (that isn't in China). Definitely the best in Manchester, if not the UK.

It's expensive, especially the a la carte, but worth it. The dim sum (??) are supposedly prepared by a famous chef from Hong Kong. They offer the option of a (again supposedly) individualised "banquet" meal where you tell the waiter what sort of price you want to pay, any special requests etc., and he will invent a set meal for you. Mummy's credit card once treated me to a 7-course meal including lobster spring rolls, pigeon in aniseed, ostrich with lemon sauce, jellyfish with shredded pork, scallops with chilli and ginger, along with some genuine cantonese classics.

I have been there on other occasions with more tightly-budgeted company and was equally impressed.

Simply superb.
