Review of Global Personals from 27 June 2012
How to get your money back from Global Personals / White Label Dating Who to contact first You can't usually report a trader directly to Trading Standards. This is because not all local offices offer a public service. However, Trading Standards has an agreement with Citizens Advice to help you report the problem. You can contact either: the Citizens Advice consumer service, or your local Citizens Advice Bureau. Experienced advisers will assess your problem and work out whether to pass it on to Trading Standards. However, they won’t be able to make a decision about whether Trading Standards will take on your case. If the problem is passed on it is called a referral. When Trading Standards have received the referral, they decide whether they are able to help you and may contact you directly. Some local Trading Standards offices do offer a drop-in service for the public. You can check whether there is one in your area by contacting your local authority or the Citizens Advice consumer helpline. What information do you need to report a problem Before you contact Citizens Advice, gather as much information as you can to support your problem. This will help the adviser decide if your problem can be passed on to Trading Standards. Try to give details of: what the problem is what you know about the trader paperwork, including bills, invoices, quotes and estimates or contracts notes of any conversations you've already had with the trader, including dates witnesses who can confirm what you're saying photos or video evidence of the problem. What happens if Trading Standards take on your problem? If Trading Standards take on your case, it’s important to know what may happen next. The information you give Trading Standards may be passed on to other bodies with the power to take action against the trader. For example: the Office of Fair Trading the police the courts service. If there is a prosecution, you may be asked to give evidence against the trader in court. However, not all cases end up in court. Trading Standards doesn’t have to prosecute a trader even when it's clear that a criminal offence has been committed and the trader is likely to be convicted. They can choose to take no action or to give the trader a warning. If a trader is found guilty, the court has the power to award compensation of up to £5,000 in cases where money has been lost. However, even if a trader is successfully prosecuted, you may not get your money back as the court doesn’t have to do this, particularly if the trader can’t afford to pay. If you are awarded compensation, it can’t be any more than the value of the goods or services that you’ve lost. You usually can’t claim for distress or additional losses that are hard to put a value on. What to do if Trading Standards can’t help you Sometimes Trading Standards won't be able to help you personally and you may have to take other action to solve your problem. You could: complain directly to the trader contact a trade association if the trader is a member use alternative dispute resolution, for example the Ombudsman take the trader to court. Your Citizens Advice adviser will be able to tell you what else you can do to solve your problem. Even if they don’t take your case on, Trading Standards may still collect evidence about the trader and may decide to take action at a later date. Next steps To report a problem to Trading Standards, you can: call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau. To find details of your nearest CAB, see nearest CAB. http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/consumer_e/consumer_protection_for_the_consumer_e/protection_trading_standards_e/reporting_a_problem_to_trading_standards.htm Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Trading Standards

I am astounded, all of a sudden without any warning have been charged
£79.00 for a subscription to global personals, does this mean I have to get rid of my card because an Idiot has got hold of my number, well I shall, will not have this happen again so please whoever you are BE AWARE

  • tinofsild, 31 July 2012:

If it’s set as a recurring card payment they will be able to take money from your new card apparently. Just spoke to my bank who have sent a cancellation request on my behalf. This should mean that any money they take after this will be reclaimed by the bank

  • globalpersonals, 10 September 2012:

KrisWhite: We have a simply philosophy to refunds at Global Personals which is endorsed by Trading Standards. If you are entitled to a refund we will give you one, and if you are not we will explain why not. These instructions you have posted are readily available on the web but we comply with all relevant laws and regulations.

robin bridge: We operate a repeat subscription service, which we make clear when you subscribe, but if you feel that you have been the genuine victim of card fraud we suggest you browse this page (www.gpl-cc.com) which will explain who we are and why a charge has appeared on your card.

tinofsild: All our websites carry simple instructions on how to cancel your membership using a freephone telephone number.

DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS! These scumbags were taking money out of my bank months after I had asked them to cancel my account on one of their myriad of sites. It is a scam, you get fake personal messages. Don't subscribe you may, like many other people, live to deeply regret it.

JaneTHy: There are simple instructions on how to cancel your subscription on the website, which in the UK generally entails calling a Freephone service. It is not a scam, nearly 800,000 new members joined our sites in Aug 2012 alone and we have a team of moderators who patrol the site to keep fake profiles and unwanted behaviour off the site. If you have any further queries you can contact us at support@globalpersonals.co.uk.

I have used several Global Personals websites and have found them all to be excellent.  The niche sites in particular have been a way to meet people (in my case over-50s) that I would have had no hope of meeting otherwise.  I am currently seeing a lovley lady whom really does appear to be 'the one' - after all these years.  No dating site is going to suit everyone all of the time, but Global Personals as a company is not nearly as bad as the people here seem to be making out.  As with many comment sections on websites, I think it's a case of it being only those who really want to vent thier spleen are moved to comment whilst the happy majority don't feel the need to bother.

Over – 50. As you are the only review on this web-site that praises Global Personals makes one wonder whether you are an employee of the company making a FAKE review just like all their FAKE profiles.

Hi, just about everyone here has slammed Global Personnals. I don't doubt that the members details are spread around to other sites. In fact I know they are. I have been in contact with an older lady from Cardiff for the last week. We met this afternoon and had a very enjoyable time socially. However the site that she joined was Just Christian Dating. She was shocked to find out that I had seen her profile on the site supposedly aimed at Wales called Smwch. Beside all of the alleged goings on with other sites etc I am more than happy to have met her and hope that we may have a future.
So for me it has to be Thanks Smwch.

Complete scam artists,no better than the MANY scam emails you get.
Sorted one way to get your own back, pay via paypal, then complain to paypal about their behaviour, fake profiles, long dead members(so to speak),vast database that has no relation to website you joined.May not get anywhere with complaint(only just did it)but there is no chance of them grabbing another payment(just cancel online via Paypal),ring the number to cancel?,dream on you crooks…..

There is a much simpler way of cancelling your subscription, which is just to ask us. There are instructions on the website on how to do this, if you are in the UK we ask you to contact us on a freephone in much the same way you would cancel a mobile phone service.

We do not advise taking the action you have suggested, as falsely claiming misuse of your credit/debit card could lead to your credit rating being impaired.

Well had to click 1 star as couldnt leave it blank. Do not use any sites run by Global Personals, specifically I want fun tonight, full of fake emails and profiles. When you ring the number to cancel it either tells you there are too many callers and to ring back or you are just kept on hold. Just ring your bank tell them a scam company has your number and they will stop your card.

  • globalpersonals, 10 September 2012:

Since your complaint in January 2012 and because of our growing popularity we have increased the number of operators and phone lines into our cancellation team. It may still get busy at certain times but we try to get to your call as quickly as possible. Fortunately your bank will know us as a genuine and globally established company and not a scam, and that is also how the 800,000 people who joined our sites in August 2012 also see us.

We do not advise taking the action you have suggested, as falsely claiming misuse of your credit/debit card could lead to your credit rating being impaired.

Hmm thanks for the “advice” but think I would take that risk rather than give you another penny! And by the way when I spoke to my bank they didn’t say ‘Oh globalpersonals? what a wonderful company’ so thats probably not true now is it?

I cannot but agree with all of the above. I have been speaking with someone who I “met” on one of their sites and she had found out that her “profile” was put across to at least 6 other totally different sites. Having tried it myself, one receives loads of scam-mail – often worded almost exactly the same – and no doubt the product of an “organised group”. To be fair, the site does take down the profiles quickly, but annoyingly you never hear back from people with whom you would genuinely like to meet. Looking a bit more deeply, it looks as though large numbers of “member women” are not removed when they leave the site. The give away is that there profile text indicates something like " I am a 40 year old ……." and the profile header counts their age from the birthdate on registration. Often as much as 5 years difference! Look at the dates of the Diary entries too. I saw one from 2007!
Trying to cancel my subscription was a nightmare with endless waiting on hold, until I found a way round it, spoke to a real person after 3 rings and received an Adminitrators message on-line within half an hour that the sub had been cancelled. we shall see! I don’t think there is a substitute for regularly going to the places frequented by the sort of people you like and doing it the old-fashioned way ie get to know people!

Like all internet business, we are often victims of attacks by organised groups trying to divert genuine members to alternative sites. We have a team of moderators who patrol our sites and remove when they find them. Our success rate is extremely high but with 800,000 people joining in August 2012 alone, one or two may slip through our net and we rely on members reporting these profiles to us so we can remove them.

Very misleading in terms of what’s actually on offer. This companies has loads of apparently specialist sites which are very appealing if you have certain ‘deal-breakers’, in my case I’m looking for someone who is slim and fit (like me) so I joined ‘slim-lover.co.uk’. Guess what? My details are shared across every website they have. I can filter incoming messages but because I have no control over who can see my profile I have a daily deluge of messages, winks etc all from overweight men who don’t stand cat in hell’s chance.

I quickly moved on to skinny-dating.co.uk only to discover it is run by the same company.

In my opinion a dating site that claims to be for certain types of people should be ring-fenced or at the very least ONLY THOSE PEOPLE WHO MEET YOUR DEAL BREAKERS should be able to see your profile. Being able to see every profile just encourages the ‘kid in a candy store’ mentality that is so prevalent on the big mainstream sites. Some folk might be flattered to receive ten messages a day, I am not one of them.

I’m just glad I haven’t actually paid them anything. Time to take the profile down.

Well Baked Bean I envy you. So far I haven’t managed to “meet” anyone through my Global Personals profile. Seriously though things are as bad on the women’s side of the fence. Just about every profile I take a fancy to has no indication of when they were last on line (which means they are probably long gone) and I’ve seen plenty with the age discrepancy you’ve also picked up on.
It’s clear that profiles are not removed when folk leave a Global Personals site and there is no mechanism available for users to do it themselves – disgraceful.
Sadly Radio 4 gave this bunch of cowboys too much uncritical air time in their recent ‘You and Yours’ series on internet dating and I eagerly await a more circumspect follow-up.

  • Oojam, 1 February 2012:

    Hi Twench,

Your mention of Global Personals in December: “Sadly Radio 4 gave this bunch of cowboys too much uncritical air time in their recent ‘You and Yours’ series on internet dating and I eagerly await a more circumspect follow-up.”

Radio 4 did follow up on their programme on January 6th after several complaints. They did a pretty good job of highlighting
some but not all of the problems that people are having on the Global Personals sites, including multiple emails which purport to come from other members but in fact are “automatic icebreakers” and it is very unclear to what extent members have positively chosen to allow these messages to come from them at all. You can listen to the whole feature by going to:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018xy2g#p00n18rq

The programme also reported on the growing Faithfulnessmatters.net campaign against the adultery sites operated by Global Personals.
It also mentioned the Advertising Standards Authority case on Veggiedates.co.uk, another Global Personals operated site, which made misleading claims about the number of vegetarians on the site…
    See http://asa.org.uk/ASA-action/Adjudications/2011/9/Veggiedates,-d-,co,-d-,uk/SHP_ADJ_161342.aspx

Global Personals have now launched some large London Underground ads for one of their sites, Datingrepublic.com, “just for Londoners”. No real sign of any change so far…

  • globalpersonals, 10 September 2012:

Twench: Some of our sites are ring fenced in the way you described and we make no secret of the nature of our site crossovers. Yes you can remove your profile in the ‘My Account’ section of the site.

Oojam: The BBC coverage did cover both positive and negative aspects of our online dating service allowing the listener to make up their own mind whether it was circumspect. faithfulnessmatters are not targetting Global Personals but all operators of dating and social networking sites.

We are also conscious of complying with all the laws and regulations including Advertising Standards, when these issues are upheld we naturally comply with any guidance given to us by those authorities which we did in this case.

Dating Republic does indeed restrict membership to postcodes within the London boundary.

My experience echos the above and more !
I reckon 80+ percent of my sent messages return much later labelled as out side the recipients" filter settings" or a very high number have been deleted for breaching the rules?? I suspect 'poaching' or seeking payment.

I have requested a refund (accidently signed for 3 months instead of 1, OUCH !)

Have had only one genuine reply in answer to a query as to why she had emailed me, when I was outside her range of interests. As for the rest; 18 and 19 year olds emailing an ugly old git like me ?? Gimme a break, I don't even have loads of money!

As for the notification "online now " couldn't see any way of communicating with live chat, assumed it was a weakness and (useless) info only??

Stay clear if you are a male, for the ladies.....I've no idea except for numerous requests for pictures other than anatomical ones.

Interestingly the rules state you can have a refund if you break the rules but not if your experience is a total washout !

Stay clear.

Tom

I my opinion The Senior Dating Website is slightly misleading when you come to join. All the options given give the impression that the amount quoted will be paid monthly via your debit card. I joined and was shocked to find the full amount for a year was removed from my bank account.
After joining I did an experiment and contacted people who are on the site-a large number of them are either not full members or their membership has expired-this mean they cannot reply to any message you may have sent and makes it look like there are more members than actually exist! Also the realtime chat does not work at all-with anyone. I tried to contact people who I knew were online via chat-every time I got a message telling me the other person was no longer online and that I should message them instead! I have contacted their technical who promised to sort it out and email me by the next day-more than 48 hours have passed-no email and it still does not work.
Summing up I feel like I've been ripped off and I am only getting half the service I paid for. Pete Symonds
