strengthofabear: “Came here on New Years Day for Lunch with Ruiz and others, ended up staying till 11pm. Good jukebox. Helpful staff. Nice beer garden. Good location. Food was very average, standard pub stuff at best and not a lot of choice.” more...7 reviews of Northumberland Arms in English
I used to drink there from the mid seventies through to the early eighties...
From day one it was friendly, great atmosphere and from staff to punters everyone made us feel welcome.
I haven't been there since about 1983 and have made it my ambition when I come to Putney for a reunion in July to visit and see how much its changed... sounds like its very different as per looks etc but as for being a friendly welcoming place to go.... no change there!
Keep going Northumberland I have nothing but fond memories x

We went there on Good Friday night to see the live band as advertied on boards outside (my brother-in-law has been there for dinner the weekend before).
The band were great (Page & Speight) - acoustic remixes, very original! The pub is huge as it was a restaurant before and lends itself very well to being a "live venue", which is where they will succeed (in mu humble opinion).
Family-run and very friendly. Free juke-box (I wondered why it wouldn't take my money!!) which is fab with a great selection inc some cracking 80s stuff
We will return!!
Based against it's predecessor, the West Putney Tavern, The Northumberland is a vast improvement. For a start, it doesn't feel like you should be privileged just to walk through the doors. But if you base it against other pubs, it's just ok.
There are TV screens with lots of sport but dotted in slightly random locations that aren't always easy to stand and watch. And charging for tap water and then getting into an argument with the customer (as has happened once) is just not on.
But it's still a nice, open, spacious pub that feels a lot more welcoming than what was there before. If it's aiming to become a 'local', which is the most obvious thing for it, it could become a bit friendlier. But as a place for a pint, a natter and a chance to catch the game it's perfectly pleasant.
Wasn't there myself today but a friend got charged for a glass of tap water....
wow what a nice place and back to great local with a new manager and his family, new chef good wine menu, candle lit bar and lounge, fab chill out night busy sat nights
sunday lunch is very good and big !!

I've just organised my birthday party in this pub (last Saturday) and everybody agreed it was an absolutely fantastic venue. Not only is the back room absolutely HUGE with enough space for a DJ table, a big dance floor and about 6 sofas but there is also a semi-separated dinner room with view on the "dance floor" and two doors to the heated back garden for smokers.
I had about 50 guests from a lot of different nationalities, but mostly French, so possibly picky on the food, and they all thought the food was amazing and were surprised of the good deal offered to us by the manager (around £16 for a 3-courses meal !!)
The staff was fantastic too, before the event (when organising) as much as during the event: available, really really nice, reliable and very helpful (even after closing time, 1:30 pm, when unfortunately one of my friends had a bit too much alcohol…).
Also, because it is not on the High Street, it is very easy to park all around and although a bit far from the tube station, the 337 and 430 buses stops just at the front.
So in a Nutshell: This venue is fantastic for parties and some of my guests are already talking about organising their own parties there very soon.
Another attempt by some new owners to make what used to be Jim Thompson's and then the West Putney Tavern into something that'll actually last. Seems ok, they've got big TVs and all the channels (at the moment), friendly staff, they're keen enough. My Guinness wasn't great though. I hope it survives, it's a handy local to have even if it doesn't feel like anything too special.
