Just to add, that it was made famous
by mysoginist,Jeff Bernard, in the 60’s
& 70’s in the Spectator & his mock
rows with the landlord,Norman Balon,
his old mate.Neither of these men, were they still
alive, would have put up with either the marvellous
live music they have now,or the Wi Fi users, who
would have been roundly abused for their trouble.
Jeff practically lived in here, locked in at night.
(made famous in the stage show “Jeffery Bernard Is Unwell”)
This is a proper West End pub. It’s slightly like stepping back in time to a more British and austere London with all the charm of theatreland in times gone by. It’s a great place, great selection of whiskeys and beers, I like it.
Used to go here quite alot during the daytime, went on saturday with some pals....although very expensive for a pint, the range of ciders is great and the Mad Hatters Party outside was good to watch on the big benches in the sun
Nice Pub, In good weather you can sit on the chunky benches outside and watch the world go by with a cold beer.
I love this pub. The decor doesn't appear to have changed since the late 70's/early80's with plenty of wood and some old neon signs of beer brands of times gone by.
I accidentally ended up here one Saturday evening just before closing time and was over the moon to find a Sing-a-long with a piano. This place has London boozer written all over it.
Apparently there is a secret dining room upstairs but I have yet to try that yet.
I also came here on a Thursday afternoon and enjoyed a quiet drink with my Dad. They have a good selection of ciders which was nice to see.
The Coach and Horses is a welcome change from the trendy bars in Soho. Fingers crossed they don't change, as that would be a massive shame.
Myself and some chums visit this pub on saturdays to start our weekend off with a bang, love sing-along (even though they only let me sing at last orders to get rid of everyone) LOL.
Great booze and great atmosphere and the sing along dame is fantastic...
I have been to this pub a few times now, mainly on saturday nights when they have a fab sing along hostess Magic Betty playing the old joe anna, also they have a nice range of draft cider. Not seen the landlord yet but I understand he is a bit of a character.... bar people are quick, good outside seating for us smokers as well.
Pleasant enough corner pub in Soho, serving a couple of ales. One of those pubs full of wood, that look a bit grotty, but are generally alright.
I had a pint of the St Edmonds gold, which was also alright….there was nothing wrong with it, but It didn’t seem quite as nice as it normally is.
Although I had never heard of it and happened upon it by chance while out with some friends, it seems that it has a small amount of fame, due to some well know clientele and until recently a legendarily rude landlord.
This is a really famous pub, and has a great history, but it’s a bit of an old dog now. There’s very little seating, and it’s frequently overly busy. It’s ok in the Summer when you can spill outside - but watch your bags! And prepared to be bombarded by beggars.
The Coach and Horses is pretty much at the beating heart of Soho. Famous for it journalistic clientele such as Jeffrey Bernard from the Spectator and a really cranky landlord, a takeover a few years ago hasn’t changed it as much as I feared it would. Lovely lovely beers including real ales, friendly and knowlegable staff - only drawback is it’s too popular and it’s practically impossible to find a seat, so be prepared to stand!
If you can get a seat, the food is quite good pub grub, better than most in the area, and the real ales washes it all down nicely.
Nice place to bring a few mates for a laugh and a pint.
I concur with all the good reviews! Would just like to mention how amazing it was when I popped there for a couple after work on a Tuesday night and there was a proper piano player accompanied by a proper ratpack-esq singer. That old man’s eyes twinkled like you can’t imagine! Wonderful.
Nice boozer. I tend to visit on a Friday from 10am onwards for the Tuttle Club and some social media shenanigans.
We enjoy the free wifi and donate for croissants and coffee. The conversation then tends to continue downstairs and I have enjoyed decent enough food and beer more than once.
Great location attracting a great crowd. I will be sure to return.
This is a fantastic boozer. I have been going in here more and more this summer due to it’s location, friendly staff and excellent range of beer! Highly recommended and probably the best pub in Soho. Great for Londoners and tourists alike.
UPDATE - The upstairs bar was extortionate tonight. £11.50 for two glasses of wine (one of which they served me in a lager glass)... even the barmaid was shocked by how much it was.
Went downstairs at the end of the evening, two glasses of wine was £6.80 - when I asked why it was so expensive upstairs, they said that because to hire the room it was free, there was a service charge on the drinks. Now, usually a service charge is 12%, for some reason, they thought we wouldn’t notice they were charging a 50% service charge.
And you’re not allowed to buy drinks downstairs and take them upstairs for ‘health and safety reasons’... because we can’t carry drinks upstairs apparently. What they mean is they hope we don’t notice that we’re being ripped off.
I had a great night at the last bloggers meet up, but I don’t like being fleeced. Now this pub have got a bit of a folllowing, they for some reason think it’s OK to screw over their punters.
I’ve taken two stars off them. I’ll drink downstairs, but don’t expect me to be happy about it anymore. - UPDATE

Yep. Big thumbs up to the Coach and Horses, who have some of the nicest bar staff ever. The food the dished up was fab, and they were extra helpful at the Qype party by making sure they came straight to my two veggie friends as soon as new veg kebabs were ready. This was very sweet.
The pub is great. It’s old school and quite off the beaten track for a Soho pub. No bad thing. I liked being led through the actual bar to get upstairs, and the little smoking part of the pub was a lot of fun and seemed to be having a party all on its own.
Nothing to complain about with this pub. I’ll be coming back soon - if only to abuse their free wi-fi while I drink beer and pretend to be working.
There’s something exciting about being lead through the bar and out the back by a good looking bargirl - and she did not disappoint; for this was the way to the upstairs function room. And last night was qype night. The room is a little on the small side, but that’s no bad thing when you want to meet up with new folk. The chef had taken a rather vaudeville approach to platter production; trays of spanish omlette, prawn cocktail, cottage pies in beakers and egg mayo sandwiches as the piéce de la resistance.
It would’ve been annoying for the smokers to troop downstairs every time they fancied a crafty tab, thankfully there’s a private alley-balcony on which to smirt.
I liked it, even the unisex loo.
I seem to be in agreement with other Qypers, this is a proper Soho boozer and is deserved of all five of its stars. As the last poster said the upstairs rooms are as relaxed as being at a friends, I was lucky enough to attend a party here earlier in the year and it was one of the highlights of my year so far. The location is good if you want a central meeting point and the staff are friendly and fun. If you haven’t been convinced by the rest of the reviews I urge you to go – you know you want to !
Great pub in the heart of Soho, with a particularly nice function room upstairs! I felt really at home here, just like being in your own lounge. Thanks to everyone who came to the party last night, from what I can remember - it was a really good time!
Food was great - particularly the mini shepherds pies which my friends were raving about this morning! Big thanks to the landlord Alistair for letting us have the room, and to Jo and Denise for serving the drinks all night. I shall be back to sample the ale downstairs soon!
Hello everyone,
the Qype Party last night was awesome. The venue was great! Great choice! Thanks to the organizers, you did a great job!
You are all very nice. I am so happy that I came.
I met so many people last night, I made friends and planned to meet them so times next week.
I spent most of my time outside in the smoking area. It all started when I went there to smoke. I felt very lonely because I was on my own and then a few people came and some others after… We ended up staying there the whole night because the weather was great…
Thank you so much for the free drinks and free food. It was really appreciated.
I took a few pictures last night. I will try to upload them this week-end.
Well done guys!
I hope to see you soon.
Take care,
Emilie
PS: If you read this review and you were at the party last night and recognise me, please drop me an e-mail, I will be so happy to chat with you again. It is just that yesterday I was a bit “drunk” and did not get everyone’s name or usernames. Sorry… ;-)
And good luck to those who are working today… I don’t think I am going to be very efficient today…
This excellent pub in soho seems to attract a great group of people at each of the upstairs events I have attended. The pub itself is a mix of a traditional pub withb lots of history, and cutting edge modern technology for the “geeks of geet street”. The staff are friendly too.
I haven’t managed to hang out with the crown downstairs yet, but am sure that would be an experience in itself.
A distinctive pub with a character all its own, the Coach and Horses stands out among the more bland and colourless pubs that I’ve taken chances on around London.
The downstairs main part of the pub is a vibrant red-hued area while the private hire room upstairs that you can only get to by crossing through the bar is a much more subtle and artsy space that worked perfectly for a recent London Bloggers meetup.
I haven’t had a chance to try to food here yet but they certainly have an interesting lineup of pies (or pyes as they write ‘em) and main dishes that sounded tasty. What I did have however was a cherry-flavored beer since I was in the mood for something ‘different’ and it was quite good until about half-way through the big bottle when the bitterness of it started to be too much for my taste. Next time i’m there I’ve already promised myself I’ll give the food a go and see if it’s as good as the service and the overall likeability of the place.
Hilfsarbeiter cherry-flavored beer? ... “and it was quite good until about half-way through the big bottle when the bitterness of it started to be too much for my taste.” Good description.
