Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 6 November 2011

Quite a nice little place. Came here for dinner on Wednesday as a party of 5. The venue is nicely done and the atmosphere is friendly. The service was attentive and the waiters seemed interested.

For starters I had pork belly with apple compote and mustard, this was very good, crispy on the outside and moist and melt in the mouth on the inside. The apple and the mustard set the fattiness of the pork off very well.

For main course I had thai spiced sea bass with coconut and prawn rice. I love thai flavours but they didn’t come through in this dish very much at all and it was disappointingly bland. Jenny had the prok belly as a main course (each of the starters can be had as a main course) but turning it into a main course just seemed to involve 8 bits of pork belly rather than 3 and double the apple compote. Whilst I could vouch for how nice the pork belly was 8 pieces with no accompaniments other than sauce seemed excessive given how rich pork belly is, especially for a girl? I had to help her finish it.

I had pear and frangipane tart for dessert, which was ok but a bit sweet. The bill was very reasonable and we had a nice time overall, but the main courses need a bit more work

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 4 October 2010

I think Waterloo Bar and Kitchen is really rather good. It is not fancy but it does deliver good quality food at a reasonable price.

I have eaten here a number of times and I have not been let down. Considering the other restaurants in the area, there are quite a few, it does come out top in my opinion.

The pork belly starter is a must and succulent lamb as a main how can you go wrong. The staff are charming and you will probably need to book if you want a table of an evening.

(more from me :)

Waterloo Bar and Kitchen is a very bad restaurant. I am just telling you this so that you not, by chance such as me, stumble in there and waste precious money, time and calories on their hideous food.

We went to see Noel Coward's Design for Living at the Old Vic (which by the way is a very enjoyable, funny and well-done play). It takes 3 hours so it was almost eleven when we got out and just wanted a quick bite and a glass of wine. On the way to my bus stop is Waterloo Bar and Kitchen which serves pre- and post-theatre food and we courageously gave it a try. I know again now why I religiously read restaurant reviews and hardly go anywhere which has not been pre-tested by trusted food bloggers and restaurant reviewers.

We only had starters (thank god!) but they were truly dreadful. I opted for the marinated artichoke, sun blushed tomatoe, olive and green bean salad (5.75) because I like artichokes and tomatoes and green beans. The salad mainly consisted of lettuce. There was one half artichoke shyly hidden under a salad leave and (I counted) 3 lonely green beans. They were extremely generous also on the sun-blushed tomatoes, there must have been at least 2. Somehow the 'chef' did not appear to find it necessary to put any dressing on this sad combination of ingredients. When I (with sinking hopes) asked for balsamico and olive oil, I very kindly got a small dish (which you usually use to dip bread in olive oil) with a (surprisingly) tasteless mixture of oil and vinegar. Very peculiar.

The other starter was not much better either. The chicken liver pate with toasted onion brioche and cumberland sauce (5.95) was an abomination. The prevailing flavour was cream, otherwise it lacked any kind of seasoning. The plain thought of it makes me shudder. The glass of merlot I had was sour and basically non-drinkable. It is rare that I don't finish my alcohol, believe you me!

This is the worst restaurant I have been to since starting this blog. Congratulation to Waterloo Bar and Kitchen for the dubious honour of pushing Nuocman from its leading place.

Marcusfletcher Odd experience by the above reviewer!
From Top Table: We regularly visit the Waterloo Bar and Kitchen before an event at the South Bank Centre, and we've rarely - if ever - been let down. Friendly people, a nice ambience and reliable food. We'll keep coming back!

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 20 August 2010

I have been a regular at Bar and Kitchen for a few years now and I just keep wanting to go back. The menu is great balanced, lots of fish, and well priced. Each time I go there are four or five dishes, from each course, I want to eat.

The food is always excellent, the halibut is particularly good and so is the duck as well as steak, fishcakes, the lamb sea bass and so no.

Service is great and the manageress seems to know everyone.

The dishes are reasonably priced and better value than a lot in Waterloo.

Definitely my favourite restaurant in the area.

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 4 February 2010

Booked this restaurant as we were visiting the Old Vic - booking was easy, even though we were visiting in December and I only booked a week in advance. They also ran their pre-theatre menu throughout december. There is a nice shiny bar area and the restaurant is towards the back. Staff are efficient without being in your face. Menu was good, with nice veggie options. House wine was good quality. Toilets were clean. Good meal had by all and will visit the next time Im at the Old Vic.

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 17 January 2010

I'm so impressed with this little restaurant. I came here on Friday night, ate too much and had really rather a lot of fun. Considering I was rounding off an utterly rubbish week, I was completely cheered up and left very happy indeed.

Comfort food is a great way of describing the menu. Lots of fish - more so than anything else. Luckily, my haddock, potato rosti and poached egg main was so yummy. It didn't even look that special when it arrived. Perfectly cooked fish, and in a fantastic sauce. And so much better than my friend's steak, which was actually pretty good (although not cooked medium like he asked, he was still happy). But, I definitely won the main course and he had food envy. The dish could have done with something green, maybe some spinach. It was very yellow despite its yumminess.

Pear tart wasn't as good as the main (or my friend's crumble) but the ginger ice cream was wonderful. Service here was fantastic. Happy, friendly waitresses serving quickly and with a smile, without getting annoyed when we asked for some more time. It was pretty quiet, but there was still enough of a buzz about the place to keep the evening interesting. I wasn't in the best of moods, but dinner here changed that and I left full and with a smile on my face. Dinner was about £50 for two, so it's not cheap but it's so very worth it. I can't wait to go back.

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 27 November 2008

Had a lovely meal here one evening with a friend, although went rather early so it was quiet, and I don’t think we got the full atmosphere as a result. The food and service were quick, and reasonably priced, particularly as we’d booked through another foody website and so had a half priced offer. The decor is fun and funky, and it’s set in such a great location, that we enjoyed a lovely walk along the Thames to work off our wonderful pudding.

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 15 November 2008

Very impressive restaurant with busy atmosphere. The food is well presented and delicious. I would agree with “duncan 157” that It was comfort food. The staff are very helpful- especially when the table behind spilt wine on my back, they offered to pay for a new jumper or dry cleaning, but luckily it came out in the wash at home. The meals are around £10-£15 and I was one of the only ones on my table that was able to finish it all. The flavours in my “Pan fried Salmon with cream and chive potato (mash basically)” Was really nice. The fish was cooked really well and the potato and sauce really complimented the fish. The other meals on my table loooked equally delicious- steak and chips, risotto, and lamb shanks.
I would definately recommend it.
nice loos as well. (always imporatnt) :P

One of my favourite restaurants in London! The food is fantastic - modern, delicious - comfort food I’d say. Everything I’ve tasted is delicious, and be sure to check the specials menu which always has something interesting.

For me the highlight is the chocolate fondant - takes 20 minutes to prepare but well worth the wait. Perfect chocolatey heaven!!!

It’s always busy - filled with chatter and laughter, but be warned: always book ahead.

Pricier than other places in the area, but worth every penny.

Review of Waterloo Bar & Kitchen from 29 February 2008

This throbbingly busy restaurant is right next to the Old Vic, with all the theatre trade giving it a nice bit of edge. A lot of the customers must be including dinner as part of a proper London night out, and are thus determined to indulge in as much wine, conversation and eating as possible, consequently, the Bar & Kitchen feels pacey, loud and fun.

The staff are attentive, the menu is solid and good value without being too adventurous and the wine list is comprehensive.

Don't expect to get a table without booking ahead and do consider this as a good place to take a date, combining a play with some good nosh.
