Review of bal brasserie from 30 January 2011

Had a great meal there last Wednesday with my girlfriend. The decor, of both the restaurant and the apartment block in which it's set, is like taking a step back into the late 70s or possibly early 80s, feeling as though Club Tropicana should be playing as you walk through the door, although sadly the atmosphere was lacking a little with just one other table occupied while we were there - according to the waiter however it's doing very well from Thursdays to Sundays (they have live music every Thursday and karaoke every Sunday).

We had the 3 course set meal, including prawn crackers with a hot shrimp paste that had a real kick, a beautifully sticky chicken satay followed by the buffet, which they brought straight to our table given the lack of other diners. This was excellent, the Malaysian Chicken Curry and Beef in Oyster sauce being particularly well received, with them happy to provide more of any dish that we wanted too.

Service was excellent - waiter was helpful, lively, and according to my girlfriend, hot (his only fault as far as I could see) and the gewurtzraminer we had to match was great too, with a really floral, lychee-like finish.

Overall it's a great fun place with really good food at a good price - can't ask for more at £12 a head plus wine.

Give the first compliment Compliment
