The Dog House's problem isn't the staff but the bar lay out. There should be at least 4 tills making the service more accurate, fast and efficient without the staff constantly turning round & round. Bar corners should be allocated.
The Dog House has had recent alterations completed, inc. new exterior painting, gigantic parasols, winter heaters, new women toilets, etc.....the rumour is that the men toilets and the bar are now due for a make over.
The Black Prince & The Tommyfield managed to achieve their standard because they closed down during renovation and taking over from new management.

Could try harder. This place should be so much better. Located right in the heart of Kennington, with the added benefit of having loads of outside seating, perfect on a sunny day or balmy evening, watching the often entertaining locals meander by. It's on the right side of shabby chic, with a large bar downstairs with seating, and a smaller function room upstairs. However, the truth is it somehow never quite gets it right. The main complaint I have is that even when it's quiet the staff seem to work at their own pace and it takes way too long to get served. The ales are often questionable and the food is a gamble. Now that all the surrounding pubs have recently upped their game (Black Prince, Tommyfield etc), isn't it time The Dog House did too. Top marks for the name though!

Fails to live up to its potential.
Australian manager lacks charisma and only seems to recognise alcoholic locals who always take precedence when waiting to be served.
The pub interior feels very dirty and one wonders when it last given a proper clean hence food is not really recommended. The beer is a little over-priced and the staff seem to be made up largely of unfriendly oddballs, not the confident smiling, straightforward people you'd rather face after a hard day's work.
People say this is place is unpretentious but I think that term better describes people and places that don't aim very high and have a pedestrian attitude to excellence.
On the whole, The Dog House rather sums up Kennington: A rather dull place, easily accessible but lacking in real character that is neither here nor there.

Well dear stranger. If you don't like Kennington don't come to Kennington !!! Not only you slaged the Dog House & his manager, bar staff & chefs, as well as it's regulars & locals; but you also insulted Kennington's residents & community. Don't bother commenting on Kennington Pubs anymore we know you are an arse !!!
Have just waited an hour for a bowl of chips. Staff generally rude. Go to the tommyfield for a drink instead

Went for a late meal. Fish and chips was as fresh and good as you could wish - much better than the much more expensive Livebait at Waterloo! Fine beer and friendly staff

The first time I went in here, the beer (real ale) was well kept but the food was so bad we refused to pay for it. At least the staff dealt with that politely. I gave them a second chance and this time the beer was poor and the service worse - it took ages to get served and they were clearly giving preference to locals who just walked in. They won't get a second second chance!

It feels strange to review a pub that I haven’t actually been into..but as it wasn’t my round, there are a mass of tables outside and it was a lovely spring afternoon…I just kicked back in the shade.
So what do I know about the pub? Well I know they do live music upstairs because I could hear it, I know they do Sunday lunch because I could smell it (quite good…so I hear) and I know they do at least 1 real ale, because I could taste it. Who needs to go inside to actually see the place when I have so many other senses working for me?
If you’ve read any of my reviews before then you will know sometimes when I am undecided between ratings I use the Stella system to help me choose. Apparently this pub makes a special point of the fact that it does not serve the ghastly fluid and for that wonderful news I lean towards 4 stars

This pub offers good food at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is non-pretencious. The staff are friendly and helpful. Private area for hire upstairs. Evening activities such as live music and tapestry nights! Toilets could use updating!

Went here last night for a quick pint in the sun. Plenty of tables outside in one of the nicer areas in Kennington. Quite expensive beer though. I think i paid about £3.40 for a pint of lager. Pretty expensive in my book. It also took the staff a long, long time to serve relatively few customers.
A solid pub, but nothing to write home about.

This pub is always lively and is a good place to drink in the area. The tables outside mean that you can sit and watch the world go by, even if the view isn’t the prettiest. The food menu looks good, although when I went there to eat the meal was fairly debatable.
