This Waterstone's has nationwide legend status.
This is the place I go to every time I go shopping in Manchester. Spread over 3 floors, it's really easy to spend an hour or so simply wandering around, carefully choosing which books to buy.
It may be far easier to buy books online these days, but they have a wonderful collection here and it's easy to steer away from whhat you know and to find something fantastic which you would never even have thought of before.
I frequently wander out with piles of books in hand. A must for all book junkies.
When I was but a yoof, I used to like nothing more hiding out in the Sci-Fi section of the Manchester Waterstones, which compared to WH Smith in Widnes, was a book-lover's mecca. Everyone who worked here was so cool too. I later realised they were all students from Man Uni, by the time I got there too, and went out with one.
Anyway, decent bookshop. I will get that badge. My inner geek lives on.
Upon my word, today I have bought a book at Waterstone's. And I have bought a plenty of books at different branches over the last 6.5 years. I've shopped at Waterstone's in London, Carmarthen, Llandudno, and Bolton, as well as Manchester Arndale and in Trafford Centre, but it is primarily Waterstone's in Deansgate that makes my heart beat faster.
Their best selections, as far as I am concerned, are centered on Literature, Cinema, Photography and Art, Business, and Personal Development. The book I bought today is on the latter subject; but in the past I've been bringing home the classic novels, books on films, dictionaries and language guides, and a plenty of other stuff that now makes my flat look like a miniature British Library.
The great thing about this particular Waterstone's is its location. The main entrance and exit is on Deansgate, but you can always sneak through the back door and find yourself in St Ann's Square. And while you are in the store you can browse shelves and flick through the books at the same time as you observe people and traffic from the window.
Costa Coffee that has long partnered with Waterstone's is located on the top floor, and makes for a good stop after intensive shelf-browsing. Last but not least, this particular branch regularly hosts meetings with authors and celebrities; last year they greeted Ken Loach and Guillelmo del Toro. Keep your eye on the printed announcements at the counter when you pay for your books.
An extenvie, massive book shop stocking a huge range of books of all genres, there really is something for everyone, from adult fiction to kids stories and fact books, if they haven't got it they are happy to order it in for you.
This waterstones shop on Deansgate is really well set out and easy to find your way round, there is pleanty of staff on hand to help and point you in the right direction, This Really is one of the best book shops around town, unfortunatley can be a little bit pricey.
Some people say Waterstones has no soul, but I always find shopping at this three-storey branch a great experience. It’s a massive store with a huge range of titles, which means I can nearly always find what I’m looking for. Plus, like all the best bookshops, there’s a coffee shop and countless sofas, so you can just come in, sit down and read!
Even though Waterstones is a major chain, the staff know exactly what they’re talking about here. Don’t believe me? Just check out the huge ‘Staff Recommends’ section near the Deansgate entrance. Another good thing about this particular shop is the author readings and signings. I’ve met some of my favourite writers here!
Even though its far easier to buy books online its still nice to go in a bookshop and hold your new purchase
This is just a great shop, the largest bookshop in Manchester. There is the biggest selection of books as you expect. It’s great for browsing - you could spend hours in there. There’s always some kind of special offers on the fiction range.I particularly like the staff reviews of books - often recomending something you wouldnt have thought of reading. The staff here are particularly knowledgable and helpful, if the book you want isnt available they will happily order it for you.Definately worth a visit.
Helpful staff with a vast knowledge of the books. Great place to find gifts, factual books or fiction! Find exactly what you need with minimum hassle!
Knowledgable staff, large and the stairs are good for the cardiovascular exercise regime..
I adore this shop and could quite happily spend hours in here. There is 3 floors of books and lots of seats, which is nice when you’re in there as long as I am. They have a great range and the staff are very friendly and helpful if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
This is a terrific bookshop. Everytime i go in I find not only what I initially went in for but also at least one other book that I just could not leave without. My fave Waterstones. A proper bookshop.
its like a maze of books mosty of which are cheaper online. the best use of this store is to have a good nosey at what books you are looking for and then buy them somewhere else. i spent a good hour searching the store trying to find a section on eduction courses without any look in can be quite difficult to work out form the store list where the books you are looking for will have been filed. also feels like it could be someones house the way the place is layed out always a few people sat in their reading i dont think they actually buy the books just have a good read.
Waterstones is the biggest, and I have to say best bookshop in Manchester. They have millions of books you can choose from their catalogue and the books they have in store are brand new and varied. They have a very large fiction area with a translation section also. It is on three floors and has a section for nearly every subject you can think of. Their popular science section is very good, with books that you would only be able to find on the internet. As well as selling books they also sell globes and atlases. They have a Costa Coffee on the third floor which is ideal to sit in and have a coffee reading a book.
The staff are very knowledgable and helpful and know their stuff. I love Waterstones and could stay there for a good few hours just browsing through the books. They also have a great 3 for 2 offer, usually these offers are only on rubbish books but the books are very good. Highly recommended.
Very good selection but in todays market, online is the way to go - amazon, etc…
The main advantage of waterstones, and any high street store for that matter, I believe that once you set foot in one, you are far more likely to spend money (especially on items that you had no item on purchasing). I use the internet for online shopping from time to time, but there is no pressure to buy and the marketing strategies that are used within a shop cannot be so successfully adapted online!!!
That is a major reason why I believe that the end of the high street store is a long long way away…
This is my favourite Waterstones store. It’s very large and covers 3 floors. I could quite happily spend a whole day in here browsing the vast selection of books and I frequently do! The stock levels are very good and the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. They have a decent sized costa coffee house on the top floor and it has good, clean toilet facilities.
This is much the same as any Waterstones you will find. I love Waterstones because you will usually always find what you are after - tends to be quite expensive though compared to the likes of Tesco and Asda who are now doing a lot of books themselves….....Sex and the City book was £24 in Waterstones - opnly £10 in Tescos - worth shopping about sometimes.
I am very easy to babysit whilst shopping.
All you have to do, is to drop me off at Waterstones and I won’t notice how long it takes for you to buy a pair of shoes, or a handbag, or a new Ferrari.
It’s like a nursery for me - you can drop me off, and I’ll quite happily go through every book in every section, and you can come back and pick me up at closing time.
Minimum issue.
Waterstones is my personal library. The selection of books is immense (if you include the Waterstones website as well) and the staff are always friendly and polite, making the placing of specialist orders an easy process, even for simpletons like me.
If you like reading - and I’ve got to be honest, I’ve not met a “reader” since 1998, being a semi-extinct species - then this place will service your interests well.
Waterstones is probably the best book retailer in Manchester. It is large, and contains a vast range of books covering pretty much all genres and tastes. It is certainly competitive on pricing, though some of the books can appear overpriced at times. The service in Waterstones is always friendly and helpful. I was once waiting in the queue to get served, and the man before me was asking about a book that detailed the last days of an obscure prog-rock musician by the name of Dorwell Moga. The dude on the counter clearly had no idea who Dorwell Moga was, but he made a good effort to look the book up. He even called the manager to see if he/she knew. That anecdote does not have a happy ending; the book was not located and the customer left with a frown on his face. But he couldn’t have been anything but impressed by the efforts of all at Waterstones. I bought my book without such harrowing complications.
I prefer this store to the one in the arndale as they have a better selection and the store is much much bigger. If you love books this is an obvious choice. As this is a big store, they have very specialist selection. You will always find what you are looking for, if not staff are very helpful and will order something for you if necessary. The books are spread over 3 floors and there are plenty of seats if you want to sit quietly to have a look at a few of the books youve picked up. Its great to get educational text books from, around september time they always have discounts etc on A level and university books. They also offer 10% student discount. I highly recommend this shop over the other book shops around the city.
