Despite finding an alternative scenic route on the way back to the station too I very much enjoyed a visit to this excellent establishment. Millstone True Grit was a good beer and the place has a very pleasant atmosphere to it.

I love this pub! Great location. Also,, regularly go in before the match and it’s great because both sets of supporters are allowed in and it’s perfect for families. The Sun lounge is lovely and toastie when the sun is out as well. Plus the food is amazing, proper food and proper prices !

Best pub in the world. Always a great warm welcome. Holdens Special and a bag of pork scratchings and a pork bap is a must

Still a superb pub with excellent beers and quite good food.
Matchdays are insanely busy meaning it can take a while to get served but nonetheless a jewel in Wolverhampton’s crown.
3 stars from Wolves Councils “Scores on the doors” so confident in their hygiene standards.
Highly recommended.

Nice to visit with the kidson non-match days, good family friendly conservatory area and the chunky chips are lovely! Landlord and his family are regularly in the bar talking with the patrons. On match days it gets very very busy but nevertheless still one of the nicest pubs in Wolverhampton!

After a few introductory errors the landlord has put his own stamp on The Great Western with some success. Has been recently voted the best pre-match pub and not just by Wolves fans. Nice pork and stuffing rolls, proper chips and Batham's Bitter. Fantastic. The other guests are no longer always Holden's either. Brough's Bitter seems popular and I have also seen Thornbridge Jaipur IPA in here. Bar service at busy times is fast and efficient. If I have a slight criticism, short measured pints are served too often. Its still a "bosting" pub though.

Absolut empfehlenswerter pub. Gutes britisches Bier (handpulled, CAMRA), Holdens und Gastbiere (wenn ich mich recht erinnere). Gutes Pubfood zur lunch-Zeit, dann aber auch sehr voll, jedoch mit sehr zügiger Logistik. Vielfach besucht, zuletzt 2008

the western is great for an easy going ale drinking night, lovely ale including a few guest ales, got an english pub feel to it but with a massive conservatory so it's spacious and has a nice area for smokers.
Tucked away behind the railway station, as you're facing the station look on the most left, go through the underground passage bit n follow path to the right, you cant miss it!!

A great pub for ale (Holdens + 2 guest) lovers. Food served lunchtimes - simple stuff like faggots & mash. Good atmosphere. Close to W/ton rail/bus stations. In Good Beer Guide and has won national title and many regional titles. Well worth a visit.
UPDATE DEC 08- been in a couple of times very recently and I have to agree with previous comments that is HAS changed so much with the new owner. The beer has had quite a price rise. The food is slow and not at all cheap. The new gaffer loves live music and sometimes you can’t find a seat or hear conversation. Not on my regular list anymore I’m afraid.

this pub has stood on this site for goodness knows how long as a child i used to pass it being carried on my dads shoulders.it was always a focal point for the regulars from horsley fields and heathtown a great pub where in recent years people used to meet up before heading off to see wolves play.a real old style wolverhampton pub.

This pub always has a nice atmosphere and the customer service is very very good. The drinks are a good price not to high and a nice place to go to meet your friends.
The atmosphere is very lively and the workers are always bubbly and willing to help and always greet you making you feel very welcome and making you want to go back again and again. There are not many places like this and is a nice little place and i recommend it alot to anyone especially for a birthday drink or a staff night out a really nice place to go.

This is probably one of the best places in Wolverhampton for food! I used to work quite near to this pub and we’d often go here for lunch. Food is amazing and at very good prices, its a shame that you have to know of the place or exactly where it is to get there as its at the back of the railway. Recommendations for food are their pork or beef baguettes and fish & chips - u get huge portions! drink prices are reasonable too. Decor is quite dated, but it suits the theme of the pub and the staff/regulars are very friendly. Definately a must if you are visiting Wolverhampton.

situated behind the modern day railway station, this pub is sited next to what was once wolverhampton’s second railway station called 'low level station’
a favourite for real ale drinkers, this authentic pub is a must for anyone visiting the town as it is a living example of black country life
living away from wolves now, every time i catch the train 'home’ i always make my way down to the great western for a couple of 'points-o-moild’ to wash down a 'bag-o-stratchins’
can be busy on matchdays, but don’t be put off as those wolves fans in the great western are the friendly sort

Well the chips aren’t as greasy now, and you couldn’t carry on selling pork cobs from a plastic box on the bar all day, not legally anyway. Food isn’t as quick, but it’s actually better, I think, lighter, more variety. Beer, the important bit, can never be as good as in the halcyon days, but it’s still one of the best in the City. Guest beers are always Holdens though…hardly ‘guest’!

I’m a regular pre-match drinker and accepted that at some point things had to change and it was with a little sadness that we said goodbye to the previous owners a couple of months ago. But nevermind, this pub couldn’t possibly be spoiled could it?
Well blaring football themed muzak shrieking out of the 250 recently installed speakers and a significant hike in price, drop in quantity/quality of the food tell you that the new owner is having a damned good go.
Beer remains superb, new owner possibly gearing up for inmates of the Travelodge and the new developments springing up at the old Low Level station.
Summary, after several years - will we still use it before matches during the 2008/2009 season and beyond?
3 stars for beer alone
