12 reviews of Jim Burrito's cantina in English
Best burrito I've ever had in a restaurant - I think everyone should stop moaning. I don't want to see my food getting made, I want to sit down and chill and have it brought to me like a KING. This place is awesome. AND they don't mind you putting your plate on the floor for a dog to lick afterwards. Well, if they do mind then they don't say. Yaaaay.
Great burrito, best I've had in germany. Not too authentic (I'm mexican and live in cali so i'm a lil picky) but still delicious.
Took a while to get the food, but our burrito was hot till the last bite and delicious.
The steak chunks are a bit big and i wasn't too keen on having to use a knife and fork for a burrito.
Cool staff, super friendly, and overall a great burrito.
Update: I'm going to have to mark Jim Burritos down a bit because they keep on disappointing. The food is generally still pretty good, although my last burrito was burnt from being left in the toaster far too long.
I feel bad saying bad things about the place, but I think one member of staff in particular is rather dozy. She seems to have no idea who ordered what first. If she's on, you can walk in and order your food and then watch as streams of people who came in much later get their food first. Then when your food finally arrives (I have waited 90 minutes) you could very well be given the wrong order.
I took two friends last week. We were the only people without food when we ordered, so I expected the three burritos to come quite fast, say in about 15 minutes. 45 minutes later, after watching plenty of other tables receive their food, we finally got ours. Mine was burnt. My friend was given a spicy one, when she'd ordered non-spicy. After a small complaint she was offered some extra sour cream. Instead of bringing it over, the staff went outside for a cigarette break.
The sour cream never came and when we went to pay they had the nerve to overcharge us!
Sigh.
I still like Jim Burritos, and will continue to go, but I won't take visitors anymore, and I certainly will never go back on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday - they are just too slow.
Old review: Pretty damn good burrito shop where the old Hatari cantina used to reside. We popped into Jim Burrito's last night - you've gotta try the new places, right?
I got a beef burrito with guacamole for €6.50 (€5.50 without the guacamole). Their burritos come wrapped in tin foil, and so can be a bit of a pain to eat - I'd rather be given the option to have it straight onto a plate without all the foil.
Anyway, the burrito was great.
brighters One bad experience in many. Tough one to mark them down to 2 stars for one experience. You've had many a delicious, well served burrito from them! Up the stars!

aLii Nah, it's more than one bad experience - it's many. Jim Burrito is good on a quiet weekday when you've got time to burn, but on weekends or in big groups or when it's busy or when time is an issue, then it can be crap.

The burritos here are so good! Not too expensive, 6 euros for a burrito. Sometimes when the place is busy, it may take a while for them to bring you your food, but it's worth it. You can also take a cold Hefeweizen out of the fridge while you wait.
Got taken here by the Qype Germany team to line our stomachs before a night out, and that's what a burrito does best, right? Fill you up.
in that respect Jim Burrito's Cantina (can't help but think of Star Wars when I type that word) does its job very well. You get your burrito, you eat it carefully and probably too quickly, then you waddle out to find a bar. I don't remember the burritos being anything amazing, but they were good.
One criticism: I'm used to seeing my burrito come together. In the UK burritos are usually constructed while you watch, behind a glass counter filled with... fillings, and guacamole, and cheese and all sort of burrito ingredients. At Jim's all the burrito building happens behind closed doors in the kitchen, and it can take a while.
Maybe it's just me, but I like to see how my burrito was born.
aLii it's not behind any door. you could watch if you stood at the counter, if you really wanted to. There is a definite slowfood vs. fastfood thing going on with burritos in Hamburg though. The top burrito joint in Berlin is fastfood like you'd find in Amercia/UK, so it's not a German thing, just Hamburg :)

Rhian19 next time you go, you can go hang out in the kitchen while we all chill out with a beer :)

I love a good burrito, and that's what they serve here. Hot, spicy and huge, it needed knife and fork action to attack it in any given way. However, the place is run by men that move slower than I've ever seen before. Friendly enough, but timing isn't really their thing. I waited an hour for my meal without a tinge of explanation, and when it says on the board if you have been waiting 5 minutes, wait for 7 (something along these lines) you do expect it might take minutes, rather than move up to the next measurement of time... hours...
The Burrito itself is not bad - if you don't die of starvation while you're waiting for it. In a table of 7 (granted it was a weekend night) I ended up waiting one hour for a burrito?? A 7 course meal, maybe, a proper Greek lamb roasted while you wait, sure, but a Burrito??
As a burrito fan I've come to know it as a quick, fresh, tasty bundle of joy that you can pick up on the run and tear apart when you have the space and napkins. So waiting 1 hour for one of these is a little short of bloody madness. Even if they made every ingredient from scratch and had a one-armed man with a single server toaster I cannot find how it could take an hour. And at the counter the man said they'd all come together which wasn't the case with half an hour between the first and last.
The product was good and big and spicy, but to be honest from my experience and not a soul coming out to apologise for the wait (they also messed up the order), I just don't have the patience to risk it again. If you do want to give it a go, try 11am on a Tuesday unless you're unemployed and need a place to stay out of the cold.
A good place for burrito lovers and "alternative" people.
I'm vegetarian and burritos are one of my favourite foods, so when I found this place I was excited to see their menu is conveniently divided into meat/vegetarian/vegan selections - with more than enough choices in each category.
The burritos are big and juicy, the kind you have to eat with a fork and knife, and are some of the best I've ever had.
When it's busy you might find yourself waiting quite a long time for your food, but the atmosphere is nice and they specifically say that on their menu so there's no surprise.
All in all, one of my favourite places to eat in Hamburg so far.
brighters Oh, I forgot about the alternative people. Jim Burrito certainly has this by the bucketload! And check out the comics on the wall - typical St Pauli leftfield craziness.

UPDATE 28/04/2009:
Been meaning to edit my review of JB for a while, as they’ve hugely upped their game a year on, and now serve what I think are my fave burritos in Hamburg. Also - the staff who work here are all ace.
Last night we got treated to the “Vicious Viper” hot sauce (see photo), which is officially the hottest sauce in the world. Probably.
*****
Passable burrito action slightly sparse on the sauce side of things, which is a bit ridiculous if you’re paying an extra euro for guacamole. Still, they’re nice enough and the place has a bit of character, along with these weird TVs from the back seats of cars stuck to the counter playing all sorts of weird films.
Very very good burrito. Dead friendly staff, quick service, delicious burritos and good beer. Only slight criticism is the lack of cheese topping, but can’t fault them on the filling.
Good price too. I’m definitely becoming a regular. Going to have to try the steak burrito pretty damn soon.
I go there at least once a week, nice atmo, great tasting food, ( the best outside SoCal).
And EVERYTHING is freshly made,... no cans, no additives, no nothing.
This is money well spent!
And the place is run by an actual Hamburger not one of the many people moving to the hip “Schanze Area” to be part of the in crowd.
Three Thumbs up!
Cheap, but not a patch on Kombüse. I had the steak burrito with guacamole (i think it was 7.50 euros) and a Hefeweizen (2.50 euros). Nice atmosphere and a smoking room to accommodate “rauchers”. The burrito itself was pretty decent. It filled a hole but it wasn’t especially tasty. Not enough sauce or kick to it and the steak strips were a bit rubbery.
I will go back again. I’m keen to try the enchilladas!
