Compliment moonrising (25-03-2008) ••••

This is a distinctly elderly-seeming station! Opened in 1900, I should think it looks pretty much the same as it did then. It’s set on the corner of the Common, with one entrance you have to cross major roads to get to (the original small dome), or you can get in via a modern monstrosity disappearing into the pavement and packed with people rushing at rush hour.

The ticket hall, in spite of being downstairs, seems to have an amazing ability to funnel a cold wind between its two entrances! Once downstairs onto the Northern Line you find a scary sight that has disappeared in many places elsewhere: a single narrow island platform between the north and south lines. My tip: go up the far end for a quieter seat! If you dare…

If possible avoid at rush hour: it is busy, and that narrow platform can get packed and a bit scary. It’s sort of nice though to see a station that still looks much as it has for many years. With so many being re-designed over the last few years, I sort of hope they keep this one as it is.
