Decent beer prices (haven't tried the food) and an interesting mix of students and indie kids heading into town or just meeting up before whatever.
Stays open late enough Fridays and Saturdays (1am usually) by which time it's usually chilled out a bit.
4 out of 5 for this boozer

Why oh why have they changed the menu – much less choice for vegetarians and nothing for vegans (no, I’m not paying for a jacket potato and beans, no butter …)
Staff still lovely, great atmosphere – but not for lunch, and that was why we went there. Sad face :…((

Great pub, unless you are trying to avoid your politics tutor because you haven’t been to any of his seminars this term…..

Just far enough out of the centre of Cardiff, but not too far to not be able to walk there.
I think this is my lucky pub - something good always seems to happen when the Pen & Wig is involved.

This is a lovely pub about two minutes from the bottom end of Queen Street, (kinda) just up the road from Buffalo and 33 Windsor Place.
It's part of a chain, but the atmosphere is really cosy and it's feels very nuch like a golden oldie.
The food is really good value. I had steak and ale pie with mash and peas for £2.99! It's hardly a gastropub, but it's got such charm that it's definitely worth a look. The drinks are very reasonable to with a good selection of real ales - plus a collage of all their guest ale badges is displayed opposite the bar.
Just to forewarn you, parts of the bar are sectioned off after 7.30 on certain nights for The Law Society - so best ring ahead if you can't wait for a table.

EdwardLaneUK, 12 November 2009:
The Pen and Wig has a nice big garden at the back, although since the smoking ban it’s mostly full of smokers and smoke. The food menu is well cooked and good value for money and the drinks are cheap. There are often quite a few students in there, and on weekends it can get very busy- nowhere to sit.

Its cheap, its where lots of ex-students seem to hang out, its cool. All in all, a great place to meet up with your friends. With a large bar garden at the rear, its great whenever we have some good weather. A word of warning- it gets packed on a Friday night.

Awesome pub, good atmosphere, big beer garden, decent choice of drinks at a good price. Only thing that spoils it is how busy it gets at the weekends, but in the week its a great place to go for a drink. Late licence on fri and sat. One of the best pubs in Cardiff.

This is one of my favourite pubs in Cardiff. The drinks are always reasonable, it has a large beer garden which is good for the summer and there is always a nice mix of people here. The students love it as its close to the union and it also attracts alot of work people from the surrounding businesses. The food is always well priced but a little hit and miss. I have had really nice food and food so bad I’ve had to send it back but for drinking you can’t go wrong. In addition, they allow you to borrow boards games such as scrabble, monopoly etc from behind the bar for a refundable deposit which is always fun. This is the perfect pub for a lazy sunny Sunday afternoon with your mates!

It’s probably the best pub in that area and nicely hidden from the main st.
Excellent place to go for a swift half after visiting the museum or the winter wonderland.

I love the Pen & Wig, it’s got everything a good pub should have. Cheap and quick food (great for a nifty work lunch), reasonable drink prices and a brilliant atmosphere.
It’s always busy in the Pen & Wig, students and locals seem to love it alike and it’s often rammed with the young indie/trendy crowd as well as older fun lovers. The bar gets fantastically busy (and hot) at the weekends but you can buy cheap bottles of wine and sit outside in the fantastic beer garden - even in the winter as they have large umbrellas and heaters.
I’ve passed many a long summer evening perched at one of the big tables outside in a large crowd - it’s a great place for joining in a conversation on another table and making some new friends! It’s a brilliant pub to start off an evening before heading into town.

Great pub - mainly frequented by students and lawyers and those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.
The decor is fab, latin and legal phrasing gracing the wall and photos and paintings showing scenes from yesteryear.
Good range of quality food and drinks are exceptionally reasonable - not many places do a nice bottle of wine for £5!
Tuesday nights are incredibly busy due to their free Pub quiz.
Their sunday lunches are excellent value and often a much needed hangover aid, there is also a host of board games available to play and books to borrow.
Overall a great relaxing pub, reminiscent of gentler times.

Great beer garden, cheap but tasty food (big portions too), late opening hours, TV outside and a fantastic pub quiz on a Tuesday night. That’s the Pen and Wig in a nutshell. The bar gets incredibly busy as this is such a popular place and they never seem to have enough bar staff on - that’s about my only whinge. Oh, and the girl’s toilets are a bit small!
The beer garden out the back really is very nice, though everyone always seem to be drinking bottles of rose wine. It’s like being in the stepford wives.

Great food at great prices. The beer garden is well covered and heated, with outdoor speakers to match. I really enjoy visiting in my lunch break or as a place to socialise in the evenings. Bar staff are extremely relaxed without being ignorant or rude or worse - fakingly nice!
Events throughout the week (Comedy night, Quiz night etc.) with promotions on food and drink.
This pub is not just for solicitors….

This is a great little pub that stays open later then most. There is a large heated out door area with tables and benches. During the day it’s a great place to grab a relaxing pint and a decent meal (the portions are huge) then by night it fills up with students, so you’ll be lucky to find a seat in term time!
