The Rock Inn is one of the oldest and best kept pubs in Kemp Town - Brighton. Just a stone’s throw away from the beach with a relaxed and comfy atmosphere, be sure to stop by for a drink or some great pub food.

I love the place although I'd probably feel a bit claustrophobic if I spent my time inside instead of just sittig outside at one of the few (2?) tables or just on the pavement like most other visitors seem to do on a sunny day.
Their sarcasm makes me laugh, e.g. the blackboard outside announcing that the World Cup can be watched on their low-def analogue 19" screen. Another time it proudly said in big letters "No Food, no food, no food! (absolutely no food)". I think they usually only serve pies and sausage rolls.
I'll definitely be going back, especially after reading on another site that they have German wheat beer. If they manage to serve it in the right kind of glass, I'll happily add this little gem to my favourite pubs!
A local pub for local people.
It's teeny weeny tiny, but not many people seem to go here so I always manage to find seating.
Because of the size and because of the regulars it almost feels like I'm drinking in my own front room. When you arrive, it's hard to pick out who the bar person is because they are invariably around the punters side of the bar having a drink.
Very cute, very cozy.
This has to be the cutest, smallest pub in Brighton. Tucked in the older part of Kemp Town, just up from the main stretch of St James Street, Hand in Hand is about the size of your living room, and is full of character.
It’s bright yellow exterior proudly announces its claim to fame as Kemp Town’s oldest brewery which operates upstairs to bring its many real ales to the characters who prop up the bar.
We stumbled in here one evening on our way back from a meal and were immediately warmed by its effervescent charisma; the walls and ceilings are covered in newspaper cuttings, photographs, ties, beer mats and old signs, and its tiny size and popularity with friendly locals make it like sitting round a mate’s house for a beer.
Definitely worth a visit on the way through Kemp Town.
The Hand in Hand is a really sweet old pub at the back of St James Street, it’s definitely the smallest pub I've been to. When they have live music it can be a tight squeeze but it all adds to the unique atmosphere.
Its absolutely brimming with character with walls covered in newspapers and trinkets, and there an ancient piano in the corner. Its a must if you're up that side of town.
They serve local ales and the mustard and burgundy exterior makes the pub a local Kemptown landmark.

Clicky little pub with a not very good micro brewery. Appologies to those who like the place I think it’s rubbish.
Simply the best pub in the country. Sunday nights are incredible with impromptu jazz performances. Also, amazing ales brewed on the premises
I haven’t been here since (I think) last summer so I hope I’m not out of date. Sorry, but I don’t think this is that great a place, mainly because I don’t think the Kemptown beers are very good.
An interesting aspect is the photos of Victorian ladies on the ceiling…
The pub has got a fair amount of character, though, so I’m giving it three stars overall instead of two.
dmj1962 I agree with your assessment about the beers - a pity, as in principle I’d like to support a brewery. But Dark Star it ain’t.

george123 I hear its going through lots of change like being on the market. They also have a new brewer. A place to watch.

One of my favourite pubs of ALL TIME! Anyone who has read a few of my Qype reviews will know that I visit one or two drinking establishments… and I don’t use that phrase lightly. This is a really really good pub. Apparently the smallest pub in Brighton, it’s a single room downstairs affair, which also manages to pack in a bar, an upright piano, and a brewery! There’s nothing superfluous here, like, say - food. Just a good solid selection of pork scratchings and ale. They have a pack of cards behind the bar so you can while away the time gambling and chatting. On the benches you’ll see plaques in tribute to patrons long gone who’ve enjoyed the same.
Open till generally whenever you like, which is nice, because you won’t want to leave…
