The Cape Agulhas region offers a veritable paradise of nature in all her glory, which will delight even the most discerning tourist, botanist, hiker, photographer, historian, bird watcher or angler. Bordered by blue mountain ranges, set in undulating hills in a kaleidoscope of gold, green and brown, with endless beaches and dunes. Fragrances of fynbos that merge with mountain and sea air. One of the highlights of the Cape Agulhas region is the spectacular opportunities for whale watching.
The Overberg is an ecologically and culturally diverse region with a strong conservation ethic centred around its spectacular natural assets.

De Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve
Seven distinct ecosystems exist. Wildlife, fynbos and bird life in abundance. Largest concentration of Southern Right Whales along South African coast from July to November each year

Cape Agulhas is worth a deviation while driving along the coast on a wine tasting or game watching trip.

Portuguese seafarers named Africa’s southern-most tip, “Needle Cape”, because here, their compass needle pointed straight to the north with no deviation. An alternative opinion says that the name stems from the ragged and pointed reefs offshore, it really does not matter much when one is stood at this tip of the continent where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. This magnificent , but dangerous sight is best viewed from the safety of the old lighthouse, one of the most popular attractions of the region. The lighthouse was based on the Egyptian Pharos light in Alexandria. The major feature of area I would say is the 14 kilometre long sandy beach that seems to stretch on forever, the caves and also the cave restaurants.
I am going to borrow a few facts from Wiki to explain why this is indeed a dangerous spot …

The sea off Cape Agulhas is notorious for winter storms and mammoth rogue waves, which can range up to 30 metres (100 ft) high and can sink even large ships. These conditions are caused by a number of factors. The naturally strong winds of the roaring forties, which blow from west to east, and the cold Antarctic Circumpolar Current flowing in the same direction, come up against the warmer Agulhas Current in the region of the cape. These conflicting currents of water of different densities, and the west winds blowing against the Agulhas Current, can create extremely hazardous wave conditions; these are further exacerbated by the shallow waters of the Agulhas Bank, a broad, shallow part of the continental shelf which juts 250 kilometres (155 mi) south from the cape, after which it falls steeply away to the abyssal plain.

A few photos as well, sorry about the one from inside the sea caves the sun was blazing as always :-) The restaurant is built in a cave as well and is well worth a visit as you can see from the pic.
