Compliment nikfry (30-06-2008) 4

Went here last year for a romantic break and I have to say Nice rocks!!! As for the Hotel itself though mixed feelings.

The Hotel is clean and in fact majestic, the main lobby is stunning!!! The quality of the food at breakfast was very good, typical continental buffet style, but very well presented and in a very laid back and easy manner. You never felt rushed like you normally do at these buffet style things. I also liked the fact that you could eat brekkie out on the beautiful patio a real bonus as it was in 90’s all week. We did not eat in the restaurant at all in the evening as we just wanted to be out and about all the time - so cannot help you with that sorry peeps.

Location wise the hotel is ideal for both the old and new towns and a short walk to the famous Promenade Anglais ( again a very clean if slightly packed beach, and very glamorous). Do not forget visit the ‘Etoile’ shopping centre for designer chic - expensive but enjoyable for a browse, and to save some time to tour the local market square for bargains and gifts for home (think local paintings, textiles, locally produced soaps and pottery). There were hotels even closer to the action - but unlees you have a huge budget I would still steer clear.

The big bug bear I had was the size of the room it was tiny!! -like could not swing a mouse let alone a cat type tiny. Not really what we expected when booking from the photos. Maybe if we had upgraded? Was not the end of the world as we were only there 4 nights and spent most of the time exploring one bar or another in the evenings, so spent very little time in there anyway. It was difficult to know where to unpack clothese though and we did end up living out of suitcases instead.

I have to say I also found the service a little frosty for my taste too - its a 4 star hotel but def has ideas above its station. The service was what I would call perfunctory .. they answered all queries with a forced smile and nodded politely at all other times. Definitely no chit chat or welcome spiel from any of the staff though.

My advice in hindsight would be to go with the Ellington but upgrade to a superior room, as they did look alot bigger and better equipped from the quick peek we had. The location and the romance and grandeur of the surroundings made up for all the other stuff really in the end. And maybe my perception of the service was more down to my limited schoolgirl french than anything else.

Oh and before I forget if you do go to Nice - in any hotel - make sure you get on a train to Monaco for the day - only costs around £6 return (unbelievable!!) and its an unforgettable place.
