We visited the Magnolia bakery as part of the Sex and the City Tour as it is featured in the series. The bakery was situated in the west village and the cakes were to die for. They are beautifully decorated and surprisingly filling! This place is visited by locals and tourists alike all appreciating the beautiful cupcakes. I had a lemon cup cake and the icing wasn’t too thick or sickly, it was just right and the sponge was delicious too. Very reasonably priced for such great cupcakes in New York. I think there is another location nearer to mid town but I believe this is the original and is definitely worth a visit.

Made famous by its appearance in Sex and the City, Magnolia Bakery is definitely a place to check out if you’re visiting the wonderful NYC.

The Magnolia Bakery now has a few locations - I think - the one I visited is the original store in the West Village.

The cupcakes sold are beautifully decorated with frosting in pretty colours - and believe me, they taste as good as they look! It took me forever to choose my cupcakes but once I’d got them out of the store they didn’t last that long! Yum!

Magnolia bakery is supposedly the best cupcake place in NYC. So of course we had to check it out. There was an enormous queue so we left my kind husband waiting and headed towards Pier 50 on the Hudson River Park to hang out whilst he was patiently inching his way towards the portal to cupcake heaven. Nearly an hour later he met up with us at the park, looking somewhat frazzled. I’ve seen queues before at MB so I don’t think our experience was unusual. Best cupcakes in NYC? I personally found the icing rather too buttery although the kids and husband wolfed them down well enough. Try Crumbs at 8th and Broadway if you like less buttery taste.

I’d never had a proper cup cake until I came here, ha well i tried my first cup cake on the sex and the city tour, which was girlie heaven, most new yorkers would sneer at that! But hey who cares, I heart NYC! Anyhow after visiting the store on the tour I came back here and brought a box of cup cakes and i was hooked. I brought the cook book and made them when i got back to england and they went down a storn. Delicious! Some people may find the icing too sweet, but i thought it worked really well. The sponge was soft and melt in the mouth, the whole thing was better than,.....lots of other things! But I would definatley recommend this place, kind of touristy, i know there are other bakeries in the city, but this place i always come back too, i heart magnolia : )

If you’re on a diet, you should definitely not venture into this pâtisserie!
All the tarts, cupcakes and other desserts that are offered are still prepared according to an old family recipe and the cupcakes (with a cap mix base) are still decorated in front of customers.
Demand is only increasing, their sale is limited to 12 per customer.
And I can say one thing: if that had not restricted me, I would have bought the whole shop!
Desserts like that, I’ve not eaten anything like them anywhere else and I assure you I know what I’m talking about. The Magnolia Bakery is mostly well known thanks to the television series “Sex and the City”.
So, if you go to New York, don’t hesitate to make a little detour to Bleecker Street…
Bonne dégustation!

I agree that the cupcakes are good but this is one of the more overrated places in NYC. They also have a new location uptown (definitely no lines there). BUT people, waiting in line, sometimes quite long, for cupcakes is crazy. True, the place is cool and if you are from NYC as I am, you’ve known about the place for a while, especially if you lived downtown. Long-story short, if you’re in town and want to really be “touristy”, go check it out. If you want to test the cupcakes and are uptown, stop in there to avoid lines. If you are impatient like myself and don’t see yourself waiting in long lines for pastries and cupcakes, hit a Dunkin Donuts!

Sometimes all you need is a good cupcake. A great cupcake, though, could make Chicken Little himself not notice that the sky is falling. I’ve had Magnolia cupcakes in the best of times and the worst of times and they are sweet buttery comfort no matter what kind of day you’re having.

Famous for their simply amazing butter-cream frosting, not to mention star placement in the SATC (Sex and the City, of course) series, it’s not hard to understand why tourists and locals alike line up for these babies every day, at just about any time of day. Whether it’s 5 minutes or 20 minutes in line doesn’t really matter either because they’re so good that it’s easy to just be patient. Even for me, and that’s no mean feat right there. They have interesting cakes and desserts like rice pudding and stuff too but I never get past the cupcakes even though everything else looks delicious too.

To keep it simple, I’d recommend doing what I do. You go, you get a box of 4, varying up chocolate with vanilla with various colors of frosting. Then you get another box or so, and repeat. Take them on a picnic, to a party, to your dorm room or your swanky hotel room. They’re good any way you slice ‘em. (But don’t!) Take some to a friend having a bad day/week/month… be a pal. But probably smart to keep a box all for yourself as well :)
