Vida e Caffe, Cape Town

Vida e Caffe has modern red motif which makes for a very continental look and feel. However, it wouldn’t be continental with weak, milky coffee and thankfully that is not the case. John Malkovich frequented this spot many times while filming the adaptation of JM Coetzee’s ‘Disgrace’ so it must be pretty reasonable no?

South Africa’s answer to Starbucks! Vida e Caffe has fast become a Cape Town landmark and a trendy hotspot. From its humble beginnings in Kloof Street to arguably the biggest espresso bar franchise in South Africa, their secret has and still is their ability to combine modern, trendy designs with a glorious cuppa! A visit to one of their many stores is eye-candy in itself with clean lines and European inspired designs clearly evident while the enticing smell of roasted coffee beans and the soothing sounds of Spanish jazz serenade you. Each order is accompanied by a delectable Lindt chocolate morsel that seems to compliment the gorgeous brew perfectly.

The coffee itself is an Arabica blend known as “Estrela Blend” and is a sweet coffee bean with a pleasant taste, different to that of most major coffee houses who opt for the traditional French roast, a far more bitter brew and an acquired taste.

The inspiration behind Vida is traditional Lisbon street cafe fare such as a large variety of Portuguese pastries. I highly recommend their Double Latte for coffee lovers but for those of you who with a sweet tooth it would be a sin to not try Vida’s “Chocolat Quente”, an absolutely heavenly hot chocolate drink.
