Compliment Darryl Snow (06-04-2008) 3

Just about the only place worth going to in Sanlitun, and that’s only because it has live music on friday and saturday nights performed by Beijing’s famous XinJiang band. They sing in a combination of English, Spanish, and Uighur (although not at the same time) and use classical spanish guitars and bongos to play such classics as ‘Hotel California’ and ‘Mushkaree,Mushkaree,MushkareeEEeeEEee’.

The bar has a 2-for one offer on sunday-thursday nights but when the band isn’t playing there’s not much atmosphere. It’s quite dark and basically decorated… with a few odd paintings of naked fat women. Standard price for a QingDao is 20 kuai. 35 for a G&T.

I probably would go here more… if only it wasn’t in sanlitun… my main gripe about the area is that being in the embassy district, where only rich, sleazy westerners gather, it’s crowded with the type of people i like to call “cúñţs”.

3 stars.
