Love the atmospher and the cakes! Perfect place to go for a coffee with friends and with children. Great to have these independent coffee shops on our door step.
Walked past this place on a busy Saturday in Balham High Road, they had a stall outside the cafe selling to passing shoppers. I tried a mocha and was refreshed to have a proper cup of coffee instead of the hurried and half assed affairs you get with the chain coffee shops. Thought I'd splash out on a cupcake seeing as the mocha was so cheap and was absolutely delicious! They use local cake makers apparantly and it shows, I've never had such a unique and interesting cupcake! Good show!
Very nice cakes and good drinks, it's great to be able to support a local independent cafe. It's on the pricey side though acceptable for London. However, they really could improve on the sandwiches, as they are quite below par for the price. I am almost shocked by how bad the overpriced sandwiches are for such a sweet cafe. The yummy mummies and kids are inevitable, this is Balham after all and Bertie & Boo are children entertainers according to their website. I'd happily perch there for coffee and cake, but wouldn't recommend any savoury.
Lovely place, convenient spot and adds a touch of originality on a street otherwise swamped with chain stores. Can't fault the service and the prices are very competitive. Best of all I can chug coffee and cupcakes while browsing the internet all day! I used to go to places like Cafe Nero and Starbucks but this is so much more local and pleasant.
A little overrated and overpriced - it seemed to rest on its laurels and ostentatious location (busy corner of Balham) after it won some 'best independent coffee shop' award... but it does have a very trendy atmosphere and some pretentious smoothies and cakes available.
i will always give a great cup of coffee a 5 star rating but today i give it 4 stars and this is due to the child factor. Do not get me wrong i do not mind kids at all, i just mind them near me when i am drinking coffee.
I will be back.

Absolutely ghastly place, over-run with screeching kids and their parents who couldn't care less as they run riot! Avoid at all costs if you're over 9!
A quirky, independantly owned coffee shop; makes a nice change from the usual chain coffee shops that adorne every high street.
I would have rated higher however everytime i’ve visited the shop it has always been over run by lots of kids and prams! Usually, I stop in for a coffee on my way down the high road, it’s a fair bit cheaper than Starbucks or Cafe Nero and certainly tastes better. The food is a little on the pricey side.
A really excellent place to come with the kids, just not with a book/laptop.
Better coffee and cake than the awful starbucks, and costa lotty, but unfortunately if you are a bloke, on you own in there having a brew, I suggest you make no comment, reference, or even glance towards a noisy child. A very uncomfortable feeling from the piercing eyes of the mothers will result. I will always attempt to go to this lovely little coffee shop but often find myself glancing from across the road in the quiet calm of Neros. Looking forward to having a baby and a Bertie & Boo’s coffee :-)
This is very local to me so I often find myself popping in for a tea or a coffee on the way to M+S! It’s a cute place kitted out in old school desks and clearly aimed at the stay at home mothers group.
I believe all of the food is organic hence the price (its not cheap!) but they do carrot cake to die for so it’s worth it!
As mentioned in the other reviews it is often filled with young kids so it’s not the kind of place you go to have a quiet moment! Definitely worth a try.
An independent coffee shop, which gets my vote, but let down by the coffee quality - sometimes very, very good, but sometimes very, very bad. Same goes with the service which is very hit and miss (Chai Latte is worth a go though).
I wish it was better so I could recommend it, but I’ve been disappointed as many times as I’ve been impressed.
One for the yummy mummies and their babies this. Excellent child friendly independent cafe who offer any coofee you like for a pound before 9am midweek. Something for the commuter there, but it is midday when this place comes into its own when its core customer the young parent and their offspring come to this cool cafe.
The decor is designed to entertain the youngest of minds and the menu described to appeal to those under 7s. I mean not in a dirty advertising kind of way but in the waqy you can have your toast as soliders. I mean, come on if you were six and learning to read that is what you want to see on the menu.
Definatly worth dropping in here, but beware babies can be noisy.
This is a great little independant cafe, with fantastic value takeaway coffees at a pound and lattes that actually taste of real coffee instead of the hot milk thats been waved past a coffee machine you get from the huge coffee chains. The menu is varied with lots of tasty savoury snacks and tempting cakes. Inside you sit at old school desks which give the place a unique and individual feel and theres an outside seating area on the high street which is a great place to sit and watch the world go by if the weather is good. It also seems very child freindly, I think there may be child friendly activities on during the day.
ianfreeman "This is a great/lovely little independent cafe/coffee shop..."; three posts all starting off very similarly. Hmm - makes you wonder...

This is a lovely little independent cafe and a great stop for a quick cafe, snack or weekend breakfast. Ten times nicer than next door Starbucks and Cafe Nero. The menu is very varied for a cafe and includes muffins, cakes, sandwiches, breakfast type things like sausage sandwiches and bacon baps. It also has a good selection of fresh smoothies if you’re feeling healthy. The seating is limited inside but it has outside stools and tables if the weather is okay. It’s also very child friendly and as such has a relaxed family vibe. All in all a great little place!
This is a great little independent coffee shop on the corner of Balham High Road. It has sweet school desks as tables, deckchairs and a ride for kids. The coffees and smoothies are top notch. Above all its nice to have a place that has individuality. The owners are always making improvements to it and its open early and closes late. Takeaway coffees are only £1 - half the price of the chain coffee shop across the road and better to support a nice little cafe like this rather than a generic chain cafe.
Outstanding local coffee shop in the heart of Balham.
At a pound for a takeaway coffee, it’s a crime to go anywhere else for the early morning caffeine hit, and if you’re after something more, it’s all here.
Beautifully furnished, offering a selection of home-made delicious treats, and even free wifi, this is the ultimate afternoon hangout joint in south london.
