royal court is truly an innovative theatre, i wrote a play for them in 2000. i loved a every minute of it the layout took me back, after every performance we would go to the bar downstairs, were everyone was so relaxed and chilled out, great atmosphere to eat and watch fantastic one of a kind plays.

A great theatre which always has new, alternative plays which I usually wouldn’t think to go to. Their most recent production, Wig Off, was interesting to say the least! It was uncomfortable at times but fantastic acting made it a pleasure to be part of and the interaction with the audience made it memorable.

The bar downstairs is always good for a quick drink and provides a relaxed atmosphere away from the rest of Sloane Square!

The Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square usually shows high quality productions which are often entertaining, challenging and cutting edge. There are two stages in the theatre. I saw and enjoyed Hitchcock Blonde in the main theatre and Scarborough in the smaller upstairs theatre. There are two bars, one in the basement which provides food, and one on the first floor with a balcony that has a great view looking out over Sloane Square. Its normally quite cheap compared with the west end, and I’d definitely recommend checking out what is on here if you are thinking of visiting the theatre.

Pretty much the most important theatre in the UK, if not Europe, this is the home of new writing. It tends to get stuck in a rut from time to time, so you’ll have a year of plays about bullimic shopgirls, a couple of years focusing on gay rape - basically the theatre’s run by, and attended by, a predominantly white, middle aged, middle class group choosing plays that are anything but that. They’re rather patronising, but when the piece works out, it works out wonderfully, and it’ll always be programming plays that are very different to most other places.

The bookshops incredible and very cheap too (unlike the soft drinks!). The bar’s very nice too, but be prepared to find lots of people glancing over your shoulder looking for somebody more famous!

My favourite theatre in London and one of my favourite bars. The theatre has two separate theatrical spaces: the main one is a traditional proscenium theatre, but very intimate with some gorgeous well worn leather seating. The smaller space upstairs is so flexible that is never the same twice. The bar is at the lower ground and extends underneath the road, a very cool thing, although not immediately obvious. Friendly atmosphere, many theatre (and often famous) people and some of the best chips in London. Also great for breakfast, I have had the most tasty and freshest almond croissant there. I go there as much for the productions as for the space.

I think the Royal Court is great. They always have something good on, they have a great studio upstairs, the new wrting they produce is fantastic, and the best thing about them is that they encourgae people to come by being comparitavely cheap.

The bar is great…and my personal favourite….they have a bookshop!!! You can get really cheap copies of the plays they do, and a whole raft of others.

I love this theatre, and I think that the whole experience is just right.

Presenting interesting, new writing, set in a funky building with two theatres and a great bar downstairs, and offering world class drama and affordable tickets, it’s so much better than going to watch some trite tribute show in the West End costing you half your mortgage.

Go along, catch a show, and tell me if I’m wrong.
