Royal China Club (not be confused with Royal China a few doors down) is my favourite dim sum restaurant in London. I prefer the dim sum here to the places I visited during my recent holiday in Hong Kong. There are a large number of steamed dishes, especially shumai and dumplings, which are what I crave most about dim sum. (I cannot speak for the quality of the pork buns, as I don’t care for them.) The steamed dishes are soft, delicate and well made (ie, the little treats don’t stick to the steamer). The fillings are fresh and innovative/”new school”, meaning interesting combinations of ingredients that include less pork and more vegetables. My favourites are the lobster dumpling, scallop dumpling, and shumai. My mouth waters just thinking about them. I also highly recommend the baked dessert bun with pineapples. As for the ambiance, it is leaps and bounds better than most dim sum restaurants (only Yauatcha beats it). Every time I come with friends, we leave very content for about £20-£25 per person. Recommended for a ‘meet the parents’ meal or weekend brunch with a large group of friends.
