Paddington and Lancaster Gate are not areas known for their food and Angelus may start to change this. In a little dead-end street, a former manager of Aubergine has started an excellent French Bistrot with superb food, impeccable service and great atmosphere. He managed to “import” a sous-chef from Le Scribe in Paris who was attracted by the challenge of starting a place from scratch and a smaller kitchen. Since the place opened it became quite “hot” and busy but still this is, probably because of its location, a relatively well preserved secret. There is a nice room that can be rented for spacial occasions in the basement with a pretty cool view on the cellar. But the best table is in… the kitchen. Small with 5-6 seats only but quite a unique experience with the view on the ballet of the cooks in this small kitchen working real hard to cope with the orders coming from upstairs. So to do something really different with friends I suggest you try the “chef’s table” as the menu is conceived on the fly by the chef and if you want him to do something different you can ask for it too. Note that there is a very elegant and comfortable bar at the back with a few tables and sofas. Worth trying (especially the Chef’s table!).
Oct 08: Just been back there and tried eating at the back of the restaurant in the “lounge” area, great atmosphere, dim light and fantastic food. This is now officially my favourite restaurant in London!
