Review of The Stag from 20 October 2010

A pleasant pub on the A128 Brentwood-Ongar road. Large garden and plenty of parking. A small restaurant area to one end of the bar.

Good food, well presented and plentiful. Recommended.

Not bad at all. The pub is under new management since about a month ago and is now run by Rick and Tony, one of whom is a fierce looking bald man with tattoos, who serves everyone very efficiently with a choice of roast Sunday lunch - with nut roast and a couple of fish choices. I enjoyed my scampi, while the rest of our group had roast beef. Two of my friends cleaned their plates, while the other was put off by all the food arriving on one plate rather than being able to serve oneself from a separate plate of vegetables. The vegetables were a little on the luke-warm side, but there were large helpings of 4 or 5 different veg. Under £30 for 4 mains and 4 coffees, so pretty reasonable all round and a pleasant, quiet atmosphere.

Found this pub by chance sometime last year. Having a drink in the garden area and spoke to one of the more mature locals whom had just finished dinner. Him and his wife go there every Sunday for dinner; as do the other locals. That was good enough for me. Service good, food good (home made) desserts brilliant. Staff friendly. Value for money. Ringing today to book a table for four if we can get in. Think they only serve food up to 3pm. Ring and check. Linda Romford
