Over priced nonsense with very unhelpful staff.
I went here in a bid to support a smaller coffee shop than the multinational Starbucks, Chocolate Soup's neighbour on Hunter's Square.
Oops, mistake. There were 2 people in front, yet was ignored for 5 minutes, and waited 10 for the order. A polite 'Will the coffee be much longer, please?' was met with breathtaking rudeness, at a very loud volume, by the supervisor.
But at least it stopped her bullying the hard-working barista for a moment.
He, and the decent macchiato he made, were the only saving grace, and get a star each.
I've worked in coffee shops before, so I'm perfectly aware of the stress and demands of the job, but equally aware of the importance of customer service. I sincerely hope this problem has been rectified.
Until then, Starbucks it is.
went there with a friend last week had a hot chocolate , it was ok not the greatest one ive ever had! there was not much variety on the cakes and sweets side ! but all in all it is good to have a hot soup or drink after walking in the cold windy streets of edinburgh
Amazing muffins and chocolate treats but the coffee is sadly disappointing. Nevertheless, it is well worth going there if you have a sweet tooth and even better if you can snatch a window seat and watch the world go by.
i've been there a couple times to have some coffee. their latte is not bad but their chocolate soup's impressive. the atmosphere is great.

Delicious variety of drinks - amazing!
Small and pretty chocolate cafe. A kid's paradise especially for the choice of hot chocolates (black and white ones) with melting marshmellows on top. The portions are also impressive - you can have a cup of hot chocolate for lunch and won't feel your tummy rumbling afterward. I love the place mostly for the chocolate shots, something you won't get anywhere in town - it is served in Italian coffee cups, very dense, very sweet and very real. Apart from the chocolate drinks, there is a range of sandwiches and soups but I find them a bit pricey.
Great alternative to the bigger brand coffee shops. Excellent range of drinks and really friendly staff.
Chocolate. Chocolate. And more chocolate.
What else do you need to know?
The chocolate soup of the name is thick, luscious stuff that young children could drown in and Willy Wonka would forbid you to touch with human hands. Yes, that good.
If you’re there for breakfast, try a dash of it on your porridge.
Amazing hot chocolates, so many many different ones to choose from. There are also lots of cold chocolate drinks (like milkshakes). Coffee too, for those with less of a sweet tooth. And really tasty soup, always plenty of choice.
Noticeable effort put into the hot drinks and food, whilst not much difference in price it does show in contrast to the bigger chain coffee shops.
I’ve missed the St Andrews Square branch since it closed :(
Was a nice shop with nice food especially for breakfasts. However, please dont go expecting to visit it as it has now been closed. It was a little expensive but as i said it is shut.
EDIT - just realised the stupidity of my post as i got confused with the one on St Andrews Square which is closed. I believe this one is OPEN. Sorry for any confusion
great location with tables outside on Hunter Square. Indulgent hot chocolate and lovely sandwiches and homemade soup with fresh chunky bread.
With all the chocolatey options on the menu I’m still shocked I somehow walked away with a breakfast sandwich! Utterly flabbergasted. The sandwich (egg, cheese, ham on a light and buttery croissant) was exactly what the doc ordered though, after the uncounted number of drinks at the Qype party the night before. Also had a latte and it was good, not remarkable, could have been hotter, but good nonetheless. They have lovely tables out on Hunter Square too and I could easily chill out here with a coffee and something sweet and sinful. The chocoholic in me won’t let me not return on my next jaunt to Edinburgh to sample some of their inventive 'soups’ though.
I met my friend in here for a morning chat, i’d never been in before so it was all new to me. I got a hot chocolate with the marshmallows on top (not very adventurous, but delicious all the same) and i quite fancied a muffin, however we opted to get one between us as they are HUGE, it was also delicious. SOOO soft and the icing on the top was to die for, i will most definately be back!! A bit pricey perhaps, but worth it once in a while :)
Had a cracking muffin and a latte here my first (hungover) morning in Edinburgh.
The coffee was just average: good but not amazing. But the muffin was slathered in proper buttercream icing which I haven’t tasted since I was a kid and my gran would bake us huge butterfly cupcakes covered in the stuff.
It was a bit sweet and I definitely couldn’t eat one of these very day, but when it’s the morning after the night before and your body is craving sweet stuff this is a damn good solution (although my hand eye coordination was a little off which meant the pigeon in Hunter Square ended up getting about a third of it).
sharnad Going here next time I visit this wonderful city I could eat a dozen of those muffins

Great to pop into for a snack and a hot drink, friendly and warm service and the cakes and treats are to die for!
