Really good fish and chips in London are hard to come by, and 9 times out of 10 they are found by recommendation.
Rock and Sole Plaice, on Endell Street is one of the best places for Fish and Chips. Their fish is fresh and tasty, and their chips are generous in size and portion. On a friday afternoon, the queue will spill out onto the street.
I would advise getting a take away though. There are three seating areas: on the ground floor, in the basement, and on the street. On the street is fine if it’s a lovely day, and you don’t mind the fumes from the Endell Street car traffic (which seems to be getting busier by the day), but the only place I wouldn’t recommend is sitting downstairs. It’s very close to the “hygiene facilities” and occasionally the smell can be overpowering to the point of distraction.
If fish isn’t the way you roll, they also serve chicken, battered sausage and a variety of other chippie-related foods. It’s all a bit heart-stoppingly cholesterol driven, but you really REALLY should treat yourself. This is a chippie at it’s best, and is always hit, never miss, and they’ve managed to keep the quality up.

The oldest fish and chip shop in London - from 1871! - and declared by many to be the best. It is very pretty for a fish and chip shop, the outside covered in a mural (you can get a free postcard of it too!) and hanging baskets of climbing plants. Coloured lights hang outside it over picnic tables, and it’s nice to sit outside because there isn’t too much traffic in Endell Street, especially in the evenings. The beautiful smell of vinegar over chips lures you inside. The food is very traditional - battered fish (and please don’t eat cod, it is nearly extinct!), pickled onions, sausages, and big, fat, perfectly cooked chips in paper. I lived round the corner as a child and I used to stare at the bright white hair and eyebrows of the men of the family who run it while I waited on tiptoe for my chips. Oh, and they have nice wooden chip forks.
