What a culture shock Varda's is! The only gay bar on Jersey, and the kind of place where every only-gay-in-the-VILlage goes on a Saturday night. We were in there early-ish (OK, 10pm!), and it was empty. But very soon we discovered that there are two kinds of gays on Jersey, New Romantics and Screaming Glaswegian Dykes!! We should have known from the name, of course. Palare is obviously still spoken on the island! The bar soon filled to bursting point before most people emptied into the upstairs nightclub leaving us feeling relieved. It's a shame that "the scene" still exists in this way, but hey, we're OLD and they are (mostly) young. So vive la difference, and let these two old farts wobble off drunkenly into the night!!
