58 reviews of The Grainary - Farm Stay Bed & Breakfast and Country Tea Rooms in English
Having seen the advert in the Scarborough brochure in our hotel room, I encouraged my husband that we should call and check out the farm, on our way to visiting Whitby, it looked so attractive and the entrance was free of charge. We were so glad that we did. The curly haired pigs in a barn amazed us, and the calves in the opposite pen were very friendly. I received my first calf "kiss" from a cheeky black one. In a nearby field, little black twin lambs were lazing in the sun with their mum, they were adorable, such pretty faces. More lambs were nearby and one named Alfie nuzzled up to the fence and let me tickle his little face. I couldn't believe it, I had never touched a lamb before.
All around the barns and along the side of fields and pathways, were pots of beautiful flowering spring plants, and these were all for sale at such low prices - mega bargains. We selected 3, put them in the car, and as the notices instructed, we took the price tickets into the cafe to pay for them, and while there, we enjoyed some coffee. The toilet in the cafe impressed me. Apart from being very clean like the rest of the cafe, there were supplies of wet wipes and nappy bags, a baby changing mat and a kiddie toilet seat to aid toddlers learning to use the loo. So useful for young mums.
We learnt about the walks, lake, and everything else on offer and thought how lovely it would be to bring our grandchildren. We asked if there were rooms to stay and the young lady who had served our coffee came back with a tariff and a full information leaflet. That was when we decided we will definitely come to stay next time, the children would love it here without a doubt.
As we were about to leave, the farmer came walking towards us with a little lamb in his arms. He was gorgeous and within seconds I was left cuddling him (the lamb not the farmer), with the request that I pop him over the fence into the field when I had finished with him. I was in heaven and really didn't want to put him in the field at all. He snuzzled into my neck and I loved it. For me this was the not only the highlight of our visit to The Grainary, it was the best bit of our total visit to the East Coast.
We did eventually leave and carried on to Whitby, but we will be back and will stay for a few days next time so we can investigate the trails and lake etc etc etc.
This working farm has been developed into a wonderful nature venue. Well done to the owners and we will see you soon.

A massive thank you for taking time out to write this review. Don’t forget to check out www.grainary.co.uk for more info
Every morning I would finish breakfast and go and find them to play with (normally Bess and Harry) and when little Harry accompanied us on our walk to the lake it made my day! (We had to apologise for making him look more like a chocolate labrador than a black one....he got a bit muddy!).
So, thank you so much to The Grainary for a wonderful stay, keep us updated on Harry's capers (did you ever find the remote control he ran off with?!) and we sure hope to be back next year...can't wait :-)

Thank you for taking the time to write a lovely review. Harry is certainly missing everyone, and yes it took 3 people and Blue to get it back!
we look forward to seeing you next year. We open in March so go to www.grainary.co.uk for all the latest prices. And follow us on Facebook for the latest photos of Harry
There is a great choice at breakfast time and we were well catered for. Nothing is too much trouble for the proprietors. You can have full english or other variations. There's cereals to choose from and gluten free products. The tea shop has a great range of snacks and refreshments.
The evening meals are a little expensive £19 for starter, dinner, dessert. However, on the whole the meals are very good. One of the starters was orange & grapefruit and tough/chewy to eat which was a disappointment as expected it to be more juicy. The vegetables are very nice but sometimes covered in a cheese or creamy sauce which is not to everyones's taste and can spoil the veg. We would have preferred to have had sauces served separately from the veg and the veg served plain to give the option to add sauce if required.

Please note, that all of our animals have easy access to as much water as they require on a daily basis.
In future, when you notice that a Calf might be low on water to please notify a farm hand or to the girls in the tea rooms and not wait till you get home and post it on our QYPE page.

Very good value for money, comfortable and homely.
As a keen gardener the only disappointment was the plants for sale which needed better presentation and care, otherwise a super, relaxing holiday with great tea and cakes too, try the Coffee cake it's to die for!

We are a country tea rooms serving fresh home made food and catering for adult, children, vegetarian and gluten diets we personally think our menu is full of variety.
-
mrmarksimpson, 16 August 2012:
I think you need to make another trip to the tea rooms, as the lunch menu is very varied for a county tea rooms and it is made with the best fresh local produce. As far as the presentation, what more are you asking for a meal less then a tenner? If your wanting finesse you should go to the Ritz =D
-
malcolmSD, 16 August 2012:
Issue is that I am not used to 5 bottles of Tesco branded bottles of water simply being dumped in the middle of the table followed several minutes later with 5 glasses in 2 stacks being dumped on the corner of the table without any effort to deploy same. Yes I have actually dined at the Ritz and for what it’s worth the Savoy and I do recognise the difference in locations !!!

We are glad you chose to dine at The Grainary after eating at the Ritz and the Savoy. Both are fine establishments, but do they have our views ??? =D

Sorry you didn’t enjoy your visit. Regarding the ham, which you thought was tinned, I can assure you that it wasn’t as we get our ham from Halder’s Butchers and we honey roast it ourselves daily. The fruit cake, like all the other cakes, is home made and we put pineappple in it to keep it moist and as we have a fast turnover I don’t understand why it was dry but we will take your comments on board.

wirralmum, 15 May 2013:
This is truly a very strange review.
We eat at The Grainary tea rooms often and I can absolutely assure ‘Vamone’ that the ham they use there is most definitely NOT out of a tin!
The fruit cake is always lovely and moist, I have never found it to be at all dry.
Of course, maybe they just don’t appreciate good food and are a member of the McDonald’s brigade! -
Vamone, 15 May 2013:
Wirralmum I am definately not of the McDonalds brigade. I do however appreciate that The Granary maybe had an off day that day. I have since been back three times and I must admit it was totally different and quite excellent. Why would I have some warped personal agenda? The Grainary were very gracious in their comments about what I said previously and I’m glad that they are doing so well. I have since reccomended The Grainary to some of my visitors and as you can see by their comments they thoroughly enjoyed it too.
-
wirralmum, 15 May 2013:
Vamone, It might have been a nice gesture if you had written another, more positive review for The Grainary after one of your three subsequent visits, or maybe edited yor original, as the only review from you is critical of them!
-
Owner's commentGrainary, 16 May 2013:
Hello @Vamone, please can you re edit your original review and base us on your recent visits. The first review is what gets shared in the search engines and we would not like the 1 star to spread =D
Thank you -
Vamone, 16 May 2013:
Hello Grainary, I stand by my original comments as that was how it was when the 3 of us went there. On reflection I should have tackled you about it at the time but we had a friend with us and didn’t want to make a fuss. I don’t appreciate being personally verbally attacked by one of your regulars so am in no mood to change what I have said. I actually made an error, I’ve only been twice since. The first subsequent visit was ok, that was to meet up with the friends that are staying with you whom have no wish to be drawn into this and why should they? The second visit was reasonable but nothing exceptional. If I come again I’ll make myself known to you. We have quite alot of visitors and are always on the lookout for places to reccomend to them. So far I have 2 places on the list.
