3 reviews of Gold Reef City in English
Such a great place to go if you just want to relax by the lake or have some great fun walking around. The golf course is a fantastic course, as they have massive competitions there too. There is a game reserve just outside of the City too!
Gold reef city was one of my favourite places growing up and is trully a family friendly place. There's an old fashioned town with 'saloon bars' and penny farthings, ancient-looking sweet shops with swirly boiled sweets and candy canes.
There's the bumper cars, coco pan - a boat that swings back and forth with incrasing speed until it goes completely over in a ring and terrifies little kiddies. There's the looping star rollercoaster and perhaps the most iconic; the log ride. This ride is known by all school kids who line up to do it over and over as you float in a log along a track in a jungle scene until the final slow creep up a daunting tower and the log crashes down to the bottom to land in the water and everyone gets soaked.
There's also an education piece here though where you can go down in the mine's (which give the place it's name) and see exactly how gold mining took place. Lastly there are a few bars for the evening and a production at a mini theatre. Great spot to spend a sickie but be careful driving home as it's a bit far out form most things so if you've had a few drinks you may need to designate a driver.
Gold Reef City is home to an amazing heritage of South Africa and it’s Gold mining history. If you are looking for something to do in Johannesburg and you love having fun, then Gold Reef should be on the top of your list!! I live in Durban and unfortunately we don’t have much of a Theme Park to boast about, so when i visit Joburg i make a point of visiting Gold Reef for it’s awesome rollercoasters and scary rides!! Gold Reef caters for anyone and everyone who loves an adventure…you can choose to explore the history behind it all, or just go for the fun rides. I LOVE the Golden Loop, Miner’s Revenge and Anaconda. I am yet to try the Tower of Terror, which apparently IS TERRIFYING!! There are over 30 rides to choose from!! If you are looking to stay over a couple of nights, you can choose to stay in the Protea Hotel or the Casino Hotel. (Yes, there’s a Casino at Gold Reef too…)
If you have children (or not), you can make your way to the circuis and enjoy the funny clowns and the awesome tricks on show. When walking through the CITY at GOLD REEF, you feel as if you have traveled back in time to the mining days and everything seems so real…i absolutely love the place, because i love history! I still have to go on the underground mine tour one day, because GOLD REEF is so big, that it is impossible to see and experience all it has to offer in one visit. You just HAVE to see the place!!
