The Liver Building is a world-famous building situated at the Pier Head in Liverpool. Built in 1911 as an office for the Royal Liver Friendly Society who still occupy the premises today. It stands as an architectural beauty against the equally famous Liverpool skyline and is one of the so called three graces, the others being the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building.
The main and best known features of the building are two statues of Liver Birds which stand above two massive clock towers. The clock faces are bigger than Big Ben in London and were placed there so crew from passing ships could see the time as they sailed through Liverpool waters.
The Birds themselves act as an easily recognisable welcoming beacon to the City of Liverpool and legend has it that should the Birds ever fall then so will the City.
Being from Liverpool I’m in the city centre a lot and you just can’t help but look up at these magnificent birds. The building and the birds are particularly stunning when lit up at night.
