Excellent rescue who do great work finding homes for unwanted pets and working to reduce the number of unwanted pets with their excellent free bullbreed neutering scheme. They helped us over several years with a colony of feral cats in our garden, and the quality of care they offered the cats was second to none. Having visited the Mayhew on many occasions, I would have no hesitate in thoroughly recommending this rescue.
I disagree completely. I don't think Mayhew Animal Shelter has been honest about the animals they are rescuing. I found a stray rabbit but they would not take in the rabbit because they 'are not in a position to take in rabbits'. How cold for an 'ANIMAL' home, I thought.
However, their website explicitly included rabbits (and strays to boot There's ONE ad for a reserved rabbit (strangely, this rabbit has been reserved for a looong time now), I don't know exactly how genuine that ad is.
I just wonder how many rabbit lovers' donations they have received. Isn't it wrong to falsely advertise and mislead the donating public?
I'd rather donate to honest charities specifying the type of animals they rescue and then actually do that.
fredawantsminnieback I agree with you Junashida I also have my doubts regarding the sincerity of the Mayhew.
The 12th Dec. 2009 I went to the Mayhew for help I took a dachshund "Minnie" to them because I had to go to New York she was left with me she had been abused my problem was that I didn`t have time to get her the rabies shot to take her with me. I bought the carrier and found out that American Airlines allow one to check in with her I was very upset I had got her trust and started to house train her she loves her treats but I didn`t have time to get her passport. I explained this to the Mayhew gave them a 100 pounds for her keep all her food ect... I wrote a letter telling them all about her little idiocyncrysies then they asked me to sign a paper as I was writing them a cheque for a 100 pounds .
I was very upset at leaving her when I got home I looked at the piece of paper It took away all my rights to Minnie I immediately phoned I couldn`t get through the next day I phoned all day and got excuses so the next day I drove to the Home they refused to return her and lied they told me that Caroline Brown was the manager she was extremely rude and contradicted herself. I then tried to get hold of the CEO Caroline Yates if possible she was more disingenuous than Miss Brown she knew I was leaving The next day for the U.S she refused to let me have Minnie then the next week my daughter saw Minnie up for adoption on their website. I phoned from NY and spoke to C Yates asking her why- she said they were overcrowded at the Mayhew. I said I would get my daughter to pick Minnie up and pay all expensies that they may have incurred I also mentioned that Minnie was not abandoned as she had described on the web. She was rude patronising and offensive and dismissive refused to entertain the idea of returning Minnie to us despite the fact I offered references from my vet. Minnie was then taken off the adoption page. We wrote letters to all the supporters of the Mayhew Joanna Lumley, Ricky Gervais, the Mayor The Rev. Graham Noyce who works with them no answer from any of them . The Mayhew 50 years ago was not very posh, it had no smart magazine or smart actors but it did have HEART WHICH IS SADLY LACKING NOW. wHY WILL mAYHEW NOT RETURN MINNIE WHEN THEY ARE OVERCROWED ? Of course they provide a service and help some animals but they seem to pick and choose. Minnie is back up for adoption I have summoned the Mayhew Home in court for her return.

The Mayhew do a fantastic job of looking after their rescue animals. I went there for a cat but left heartbroken as I wanted to take all the little animals home for me.
They are a charity & look after their animals well. The cats have their own outside area to play in & lots of space. A few rescue places have seemed quite depressing for me as they are so limited in what they can do as the rescue homes cannot afford to do more. The Mayhew somehow makes it seem like they are providing an interim home rather than a cage for their animals.
If you do go there please give generously, they do an amazing job with their animals & the aftercare is second to none. You can see how much they care about their animals, it’s heartening to see.
A fab place if you have a pet as they offer vaccinations, neutering and microchipping at great prices. Vaccinations are about £20, Microchipping £15 and neutering about £20 (if I remember correctly - call for actual prices, and they also often do special offers, I know there is a microchipping day coming up where they are offering it for £10). They also do a low cost vetinary service on certain days. Plus of course they have lots of animals to rehome.
