Legends was opened around 7 years ago by the infamous Julia Grant who also had the successful (at the time) Hollywood Showbar under her wing. She made a go of it for a year or so and then disappeared in the middle of the night and was rumoured to be living in a caravan in Spain for a while Wherever she is, I wish her well.

I had grown to love Legends by this point and everyone was worried at the time about it’s future. To our great relief it was taken over by the fabulous Julian and Gorge and is going strong. In fact they recently celebrated their 5th year of business.

So what is it that is so special about Legends?

For this loyal customer it is the community and links that have built up in Legends and its sister business, The Outpost, over the years. everyone is made welcome regardless of looks, taste etc. The music is always top notch, especially in The Tunnel Bar where hi nrg is played all night so if Soft Cell, Visage, Erasure and lots of camp is your taste you will love it here.

On the main dancefloor you get all the fillers with surprises thrown in, and often mixes and releases are played here before any other club when Julian and Jorge bring the latest releases back from new York.

The Mineshaft crowd like their music a bit louder and a bit harder so you will hear lots of hard house and drum and bass mixes down their.

The staff too have been loyal, especially Hazel in the cloakroom and Vi who works all bars and of course Linda. This is rare in a Manchester gay bar and just goes to show what a great place it is.

So, if you want a change from canal Street which seems to be full of stags and hens these days or people throwing up into the canal wall then make your way to Whitworth Street and Legends and be sure of a warm welcome and a great night and trust me, you’ll be back.
