For those of you who still think that we all wear cloth-caps and roam around with our Whippets up in the far North!!!!!........just to show that we do have a little culture hereabouts. This small theatre is a gem…and is heavily supported by the local populace…...and of course our visitors from far and wide. There is something going on here at all time, whether it is workshops for adults and children alike or exhibitions and shows and even movies. Because it is situated within the same building as our library (which is also one of our gems)...it is well placed and receives a great deal of attention from the constant stream of visitors…......and of course the delightful Cafe which is also housed within the building, here you can get REAL coffee and georgeous snacks, meals, desserts and absolutly fab ice-cream, the prices are very reasonable and there is the bar if you feel like something with a little more bite. The whole place has just gone through some very exstensive refurbishment quite recently without destroying the fabric of the architecture…....so although it is very swish inside, the outside still fits in with this beautiful Abbey Town. The Queen’s Hall is a magnificent early Victorian building which faces Hexham Abbey (dating from 647AD). From its christening as an arts centre in 1983 until the hand over to the charitable organisation, Queens Hall Arts in 2001, the building was under local authority control. The building is shared with Hexham Library and the Exchange Café, both tenants of Queens Hall Arts. Queen’s Hall’s resident theatre company Théâtre Sans Frontières is based in offices at QHAC and opens all of its shows in the Theatre. Queen’s Hall Arts Centre boasts a 350-seat theatre, two galleries, three function rooms, an artist loft and various work rooms, all managed by Queens Hall Arts. QHAC has established itself as a strong base for an extensive range of artistic activity, attracting the best international and national artists from music, drama, dance and national touring comedy to non professional shows put on by local community groups. Queen’s Hall Arts (QHA) is the charitable company that manages the venue, Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, and provides an art service to a large part of rural Northumberland. In addition to programming within the building, QHA delivers an extensive outreach service bringing workshops and performances to communities throughout Tynedale, the largest rural district in the country. QHA receives regular financial support from four main funders; Tynedale Council, Northumberland County Council, Arts Council England and Northern Film & Media.
Queen’s Hall Arts Centre provides disabled access to all public areas of the building with ramps, automatic doors, disabled toilet facilities and lifts. An Induction loop is installed at the back of the stalls in the theatre. Dogs are welcome in all areas of the building. Companions of wheelchair users may attend shows free of charge. For the audience’s safety the Red Cross attend during performances. The Exchange Café is open from 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Saturday / 10.00am – 4.00pm on Sundays & Bank Holidays. They serve food up until 7.00pm on an event evening. To reserve a table please contact them direct. The Exchange Café provide a bar service. They serve from the café and from the bar in Gallery Two before a performance and during the interval.
