The Basilica of St Stephen is Budapest’s largest church, and one of its largest buildings. It’s not as ancient as some other European churches (only consecrated in 1905) but is interesting because of its history of damage (due to storms and wars) and subsequent reconstruction.
The highlight is the relic it keeps in a side chapel: the mummified hand of St Stephen. It’s a black, withered, gruesome appendage in an ornate lead and glass box that lights up if you drop in a coin. Rarely are holy relics so weirdly presented. On St Stephen’s Day (Aug 20) they parade the hand around the square.
You can also climb the ~360-step bell tower for a great view of Budapest.
