A very good cinema in the Jungfernstieg area with a lovely retro style cocktail bar. Streits took over from Grindel (sadly no longer open) as the main English language cinema in Hamburg and also has the sneak-previews on Monday nights.
My favourite cinema in Hamburg!
As opposed to all those soulless new multiplexes, the Streit's only has one screen and doesn't even have a popcorn machine, which is quite the advantage: Because you have to choose which movie you want to watch, you treat the screening as something special. All too often, people just go to the multiplex, buy a ticket for whatever movie and chat all throughout the screening. Obnoxious, yeah?
Stale popcorn from the big tub means it's less crunchy and thus a little bit quieter.
Before rambling about loud patrons makes me seem like an old woman, let me just tell you that the Streit's is extremely charming and cosy. There's lush carpeting everywhere and the seats are comfy and big enough to take a nap in. - Still sound like an old woman? Gosh darn!
Not only is the playing of films in the Original Language a plus but being in the heart of Hamburg over looking the Alster Lake makes it one of the best movie theaters I have been to. It has a lot of history and it shows. Unfortunately, the owner wants to shut the place down but I am praying it gets a buyer and they renovate it to its old glamours self it once was. The seats currently are not the best and it can get a bit hot in there when it is a packed house especially in the summer time. Prices are good and the staff is friendly. Don't forget about their exclusive private theater are that you can book for birthdays and private events. I will be doing this on my big 30th!
I adore the Streits. The atmosphere is unique, it's one of the few remaining small movie theatres. It's located right in the city centre and easily accessible with public transport (the closest station being Jungfernstieg or Gänsemarkt). What makes it stand out is the selection of artsy movies as well as movies in their original version. Great stuff!
Depending on when you want to go or which film you'd like to see, it's advisable to book/buy tickets beforehand because the theatre is quite small. Prices are in the middle range.
The reason I go to Streits is the original version. Only problem with Streits is they don't have 3D.
Streits Filmtheater Hey Tahmina,
we do have 3D since December 2010!

Snow, popcorn and a movie! Or sun, ice cream and a movie.
I love this place, you can always find a ticket, make your own reservation in internet .Plus all movies in original language!
ps: Menu might be more rich or original, anyway you don t go there to eat, but to watch...
Great cinema in the middle of Hamburg. Been here quite a lot when i lived in Hamburg. It has only one room but the seats are comfy and some of them are cuddle-seats (means the armrest between two seats is missing.....but that is meant to be like that).
When you enter the cinema they have a small ticket counter and next to it you can buy the usual food and drink. What's special about this cinema is the cocktail lounge which is also situated in the entrance hall. It's not very big, but the atmosphere is very nice.
Quality of the movies and the sound are in my opinion just as good as in any other cinema i've been in. What i should mention is that not all movies are OV. So you have to have a close look whether the movie is been shown in german or in english. The prices are quite good for such a small cinema. Round about the same as in the huge complexes. And they give discount for students and they have a movie-day when the prices are cheaper for everyone.
A really good cinema which i can only recommend to all the friends of OV-movies.
As cinemas go, this is a fairly decent one. Comfy seats, nice bar, shows original versions, not a chain, you can take beer and wine in. The queues can be a bit excessive, but then how would you staff up a cinema? I've not really thought about it to be honest!
Great atmosphere, good movies in their original language, and good coffee. What more could you ask for?
Do they never have subtitles? My german is very limited but my girlfriend speaks fluently, and we want to go to the cinema toghether... So an english movie with german subtitles would be awesome.
Anyone know of a cinema with that?
Liron Does your girlfriend speak English? If so, you can just go to the original language films at Streits', they're mostly in English.

The only Cinema in Hamburg I could find showed Movies in English, loved the atmosphere, great location togo for something to eat as well,
The only cinema i go to in hamburg!
One of the very very few that has movies in english in Hamburg!
yey!
however the choice is very limited, they only have the big big bockblusters in english, movies that i dont really like: Harry Potter, Demons and Angels, etc …
But its refreshing going to the movies and ACTUALLY understanding and enjoying the movie!
Thumbs up for Streits!
Hurray - original movies ! You bet that the girl whos selling you the tickets has a major headache and if she has to listen to people with english accent ( hello? ) it will make it worse so she said . Plus she puts all the people in one row and leaves at least 5 empty . Bad bad thing….
So glad Streits is now showing English original language films without subtitles. I still mourn the Grindel, preferred the stadium style seating there. The seats at Streits are good though, they even have double “Cuddle Seats” in the last two and first two rows of the gallery (upstairs). Plus it’s an old theatre with a lot of style like the Holi.
I do like the online reservation even though from my experience the theatre was never even close to being full, no matter what day or time or how long the particular movie had been out. And I think they charge more for reservation of seats.
The Streits is pretty much the only theatre I go to nowadays unless I watch a German or other non-English film.
Now, you won’t believe it people, we went to this movie theatre just to have a couple of drinks. I suppose next time we’ll go for drinks it will be Fuhlsbuttel airport :)
Leaving sarcasm aside, I just have to admit that Streight’s bar was not the right choice. I wouldn’t go there even for a drink before movie. It is way too smal, not blended into the whole hall area and as one of our guys said 'it’s like a waiting room’. And that’s exactly what people are supposed to do there: wait before movie starts! So 5 stars for the movie theatre, 1 star for bar.
aLii The bar is actually in Qype as a separate place, “Streits Lounge”. Somehow it got to be ranked as one of the best bars in Hamburg. I really don’t understand. Anyway, you should go review the bar :)

Ok first off 5 Stars just for the fact they have taken up where UFA Grindel gave up. Showing films in English!!!
Online reservations are great. You can even reserve where you want to sit! This is not a normal occurance for a cinema in Hamburg (not that I have found).
Reservation pickup is great. The guy suddenly started speaking to me in English which confused me (Especially as I started out speaking German to the guy). So they are on the very helpful level.
The waiting area / bar / snack zone was a little cramped I must admit. Especially when it was getting to the point where people needed to migrate into the cinema.
Snack area was pretty ok. Although I did notice drinks were mainly served in the glass bottle variety. The bar is nice, not that I tried it. Next time perhaps.
The cinema itself that we were in was great. Good big comfy seats. No feeling of being handled like cattle at all!
Quality of playback was great. Only minus point was the sound. Not sure if it was a one off but when the film got extremely loud (big crash / explosion) I got the impression the sound system decided to cut out for a second.
For all you English people out there that are still mourning the downfall of Grindel. Get yourselves over here quick!!!! Daily showings in English.
I think it’s the only cinema in Hamburg now that shows English films. The location is good, it’s near the Jungfernstieg U-Bahn. The prices are ok. I paid 8,40 on a Sunday evening for Indiana Jones 4.
gourmet Ja klar Stephan, da hast Du völlig recht. Ich find es halt nur schade, dass er nicht auch mal etwas auf Deutsch schreibt.

Tahmina Streits is not the only cinema where you can find English movies. Abaton has English moves too. But mostly OmU (Original with subtitle.)

English films! No subtitles!
The screen is decent, the theatre is pretty nice. I’ll be back.
