Compliment jpulfrey (14-05-2008) •••••

Stumbling and soaked I arrived at the Sportsmans Inn after a twenty mile hike and a screw up with my train times. Desperate for a room after being turned away elsewhere I was delighted to be provided for. Not only was this delightful little inn a wonderfully decorated oasis and a startling surprise considering the patriotic flags hanging outside, but the staff were friendly and the place had a lovely buzz.

From the outside you’d be amazed by the interior, frankly it looks a little rough but this is what makes it a magical place for the locals. The food looked fabulous and was well priced. Being a little pooped, I headed straight to my room to sleep and dry out a sopping wet tent.

In the morning I had a fine breakfast with a superbly poached egg, a rarity in the modern British breakfast. There was a great array of real ales, I tasted the lot and every one was well looked after and good tasting.

As an added bonus the delightful landlady allowed me to keep my room until the train arrived that evening. I’ll not forget this place, and due to the friendliness and service I will always carry it in my heart. Should I ever find myself in the area again, I’ll be sure to make a return visit.
