Out in a smart suburb of the city is the absolutely one of a kind, Hotel Lodi.
Housed in a smart residential mansion, it’s not any old cheap hotel in Rome http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/italy/rome/17900/
It’s got dorms downstairs and a warm sociable setup that much more in keeping with a backpackers’ hostel.

Fabrizio is a colossus of a manager, whose hospitality knows no bounds. He’ll coerce his guests out into the garden to share a glass (or six) of wine with him. There, surrounded by fruit trees, he’ll give you the lowdown on the real Rome that he loves so dearly.
