One of my very favourite places to spend a morning or afternoon, especially towards Christmas, for the past few years I have done the majority of my Christmas shopping in the gift shops and jewellers that are dotted around the picturesque streets, and low season the on street parking is pretty easy to find.
Almost teeth-grindingly pretty village, with stone and timber framed buildings going back to the 13th century, advertised by the National Trust as part of a package with the nearby Abbey and museum. It’s basically arranged around a square of streets, so you can wander around easily enough. It’s universally pretty buildings are very popular as film sets, especially for period dramas. But for the visitor it boasts pubs serving (rather expensive) meals and touristy type shops. Other things to look out for are the very worn cross outside the village school, a tithe barn and the town lock-up next door: basically a cell with a bench and grated hole! See pictures…
I don’t think I’d travel miles to see it, but it’s a very pleasant place to pass some time if you are in the area, and free entry of course!
