Every inch a traditional pub, this characterful building appears to date from the mid 18th century. Landing without a table booked on a busy Sunday lunchtime is never a wise move but the courteous and effcient staff found us a table within 10 minutes and this offered an opportunity to sample the local brews (good beer).

We tried the traditional Sunday roast but although we were not kept waiting long, the food was not as hot as it could have been, although there was nothing wrong with the size or presentation of the portions. I'd have prefferred a greater element of home made fare (Yorkshire pud, in particular) but catering on a fair scale means compromise and the meal was quite enjoyable.

Overall: scores highly on ambience and character. Staff are well-trained and professional. Recommend: avoid dining at peak periods and if possible, book in advance.

Very pleasant pub and far more spacious than you expect it to be from the outside. Friendly and professional staff make you feel very welcome and the place has a good atmosphere. The food is OK. I had an 'open' chicken and asparagus pie which was basically a whole chicken breast and small pieces of asparagus topped with a white sauce on a puff pastry base. It came with chips and a salad lightly dressed with balsamic vinegar. I was disappointed that the chips were obviously frozen chips rather than 'real' ones though which made it feel very much like run of the mill pub grub rather than anything more special. I will certainly return there for a drink but I'm not sure whether I'd necessarily dash back again for the food.

sunday lunch/yorkshire puds were frozen not home made/potato was smash/lukewarm and overpriced.a shame because the actual pub has character.would not recommend for sunday lunch

The pub/restaurant combination rarely works, with one or the other usually failing to make the grade. This is the exception. The Black Bull has a wonderful bar atmosphere, which is popular with locals and tourists. Food is excellent. It is not pretentious, but the menu offers good variety and food is well presented. Staff are freindly and very well trained. A real rarity!
